Kyiv, April 17, 2015. Colonel General Viktor Muzhenko, Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, has named Russian military regiments fighting in eastern Ukraine, refuting recent claims of the Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russian troops are not engaged in the conflict.
“We have a full list of Russian military regiments currently in Ukraine, their locations, numbers of troops and types of weapons they have,” Col. Gen. Muzhenko said.
According to Ukraine’s Chief of the General Staff, there was a lack of documented evidence of direct clashes with the Russian regulars; they were largely in the rear of pro-Russian militant forces. However, Russian soldiers have spearheaded the attacks during the battles of Debaltseve, Chornukhyne and Lohvynove last February.
“I can say with confidence that the Ukrainian Army has inflicted considerable damage to the Russian forces and prevented their plans for a future advance. We know that Russian regulars are still on the territory of Ukraine. For instance, 15th Motor Rifle Brigade of the Second Army (Central Military District), 8th Motor Rifle Brigade, 331st Airborne Regiment based in Kostroma of the 98th Airborne Division and others,” Col. Gen. Muzhenko said.
Col. Gen. Muzhenko also noted that some of the Russian regiments that have occupied Ukraine, such as 98th and 106th Airborne Divisions, are going to take part in the forthcoming Moscow Victory Day Parade.
