Artistic festival “Meridian Odessa” starts in Odesa on June 3 – organizers

Odesa is to host a literary and artistic festival this summer. Its historic cultural location Green theatre is being restored. The city has all chances to become an attractive cultural center.

Kyiv, May 20, 2016. This summer Odesa is to host the artistic festival “Meridian Odessa” organized by the International literature corporation MERIDIAN CZERNOWITZ. Festival’s opening will take place on June 3 with participation of Ukrainian writer Les Podervyanskyi. “Literary evenings, plays and musical concerts are to happen over the three summer months,” said Svyatoslav Pomerantsev, president of the corporation at a press briefing at Ukraine Crisis Media Center. Artistic summer in Odesa will see the following artists performing: Ihor Pomerantsev, Yuriy Izdryk, Iryna Tsilyk, Oleksandr Roitburd, Lyudmyla and Borys Khersonsky, Yuriy Andrukhovych, Ada Rogovtseva, Oksana Zabuzhko, Kateryna Babkina, Dmytro Lazutkin, Sergiy Zhadan, Andriy Lyubka and Irena Karpa. An evening of Odesa poets is also planned to be held. “It is going to be not only literature. ‘Rozdilovi’ (punctuation marks – UCMC) play and ska-punk concert “Zhadan i Sobaky” will be also part of the festival,” noted Pomerantsev.

Festival’s location is the summer Zeleny (Green) theatre in Shevchenko park is downtown Odesa. According to Yevhenia Lvova, theatre’s program director the spot is already being renovated by efforts of the Impact Hub. “We want to see the Green theatre become Odesa’s cultural center as it used to be before,” said Lvova.

Svyatoslav Pomerantsev noted that the new book of poetry by Sergiy Zhadan “Templars” was illustrated by renowned Odesa artist Oleksandr Roitburd. “Odesa is currently turning into a true center of Ukraine’s cultural life. It has its own film festival and a book fair. There are always a lot of people interested in culture, who are creating and promoting culture. […] Our concerts are always attended by the people who are interested and who know why they came,” said Sergiy Zhadan. He thinks that “Meridian Odessa” will create positive competition to the International literary festival that started last year in Odesa.

Sergiy Zhadan’s book “Templars” will be presented in Kharkiv at the Opera House on August 23. It comprises poetry written over the past year.
