Colonel Lysenko: ATO troops register 23 hostile attacks in Mariupol sector, 9 involve use of heavy armor

May 28, 2016. Russia-backed militants attacked 39 times in yesterday. 23 attacks took place in the Mariupol sector, nine out of those involved use of heavy armor. Moreover, one firefight took place.

ATO troops defeated an attack of militants’ subversive reconnaissance group south of Bohdanivka. Militants delivered a series of intense attacks from heavy armor near Dokuchaevsk from 6.00 p.m. till midnight. They used mortar launchers, 152-mm artillery and Grad multiple launcher rocket systems, informed spokesman of Presidential Administration on ATO-related issues Colonel Andriy Lysenko at a press briefing at Ukraine Crisis Media Center.

According to Col. Lysenko, Russia-backed militant groups conducted two attacks in Stanytsia Luhanska and Popasna in the Luhansk sector. Militants used armored personnel carriers during the first attack. “14 hostile attacks took place in the Donetsk sectors, 4 of them from mortar launchers. Intense assaults continue in Luhansk, Zaitseve and Avdiivka. The enemy is actively using mortar launchers, launching up to 90 mortar shells at Ukrainian positions,” elaborated the spokesman.

One Ukrainian serviceman died in combat yesterday, none were wounded. Col. Lysenko also said that Ukraine’s Security Service found a weapons cache containing a MON-50 anti-personnel mine, three hand antitank grenade launchers, 31 hand grenade and 10 projectiles for under-barrel grenade launcher and about 2000 thousand cartridges of various calibers.
