Ministry of Defense: Militants use mortars in Luhansk sector

In Luhansk sector of ATO zone, Russia-backed militants mortared ATO troops’ positions near Triokhizbenka twice around 02:00 and 10:00. In total, they fired 12 mortar rounds. Ukrainian troops responded with the fire of automatic grenade launchers and large-caliber machine guns.  “Moreover, militants fired two mortar rounds at our stronghold near Novotoshkivske at 14:00. The mortar crew got cover fire from an automatic grenade launcher. Ukrainian troops did not return fire as the attack posed no threat to our troops’ lives,” reported Ukrainian Ministry of Defense spokesman on ATO Colonel Andriy Lysenko at a press briefing at Ukraine Crisis Media Center. Militants briefly attacked Ukrainian positions near Novooleksandrivka with small arms around 11:00. In total, militants violated the ceasefire five times in Luhansk sector yesterday.

In Donetsk sector, Russia-backed militants opened aimed small arms fire six times and used hand grenade launchers against Ukrainian positions near Avdiivka, Kamianka, Zaitseve, and Opytne. No heavy weapons were used. Ukrainian troops responded with the fire of grenade launchers, large machine guns and small arms in all cases.

In Mariupol sector, militants attacked Ukrainian positions five times. “The enemy attacked our positions near Talakivka twice using small arms. In the vicinity of Hnutove and Pavlopil the enemy used machine guns and light weapons.  Ukrainian troops responded adequately to all hostile provocations,” elaborated the spokesman.  Moreover, militants were shooting from small arms at Ukrainian stronghold near Vodiane for 30 minutes around midday. Ukrainian troops did not return fire in response to the provocation.

In total, militants attacked Ukrainian positions 16 times yesterday. Ukrainian troops returned fire in most cases.

“No Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action.  One soldier was wounded and promptly taken to the hospital. His condition is satisfactory,” added Col. Lysenko.
