Defense Ministry: Russia-backed militants increase the number of attacks by 80 percent

Russia-backed militants committed 22 ceasefire violations in eastern Ukraine yesterday. Ukrainian troops returned fire responding to 13 of the attacks, reported Colonel Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, Ukrainian Ministry of Defense spokesman on ATO, at a press briefing at Ukraine Crisis Media Center.

In Luhansk sector, Russian proxies violated the ceasefire 13 times. In the morning and at about midnight militants conducted three brief mortar attacks on Ukrainian positions near Triokhizbenka, Krymske, and Lozove firing a total of 20 rounds of various calibers. Ukrainian troops returned fire once using automatic grenade launchers and small arms. “Starting from 04:00 the enemy had been attacking Ukrainian positions near Malynove, Luhanske, Travneve, Lobacheve, Lopaskyne, Zhovte, Zaitseve, Novooleksandrivka, and Stanytsia Luhanska with grenade launchers of various types and small arms,” Colonel Motuzyanyk added. Ukrainian troops returned fire in four cases.

In Donetsk sector, Russia-backed militants conducted nine attacks on Ukrainian troops’ positions near Vodiane, Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka, Hnutove, Maryinka, Pavlopil, and Kamianka using grenade launchers, small arms, and IFV mounted weapons. Russian proxies fired six 120-mm rounds near Pavlopil immediately after the sunset. Ukrainian troops responded with the fire of grenade launchers of various types, heavy machine guns, and small arms.

One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action near Maryinka.

According to the Ministry of Defense, last week Ukrainian sappers demined 12 hectares of land having defused about 400 explosive pieces.
