Ukrainian media digest 17 of July 2014

Today EU summit will consider the possibility of freezing the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) financing of new state projects in Russia, Reuters news agency reports quoting the final version of the draft project. Besides, the summit authorized the European Commission and the European External Action Service to draft proposals to block foreign investment in Crimea’s economy. According to ITAR-TASS agency information, this is a part of EU’s strategy toward illegally annexed Crimea by Russia. Under this program, the EU already banned Crimean export not certified in Ukraine to Europe in June and proposes to expand the prohibitive measures onto investments, transport, visa policy etc.

The U.S. Congress passed in two readings a Russian aggression prevention bill that provides major non-NATO ally status for Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova (during the period in which each of such countries meets specified criteria) for purposes of the transfer or possible transfer of defense articles or defense services. The bill was submitted to the competent commission for being prepared for the final reading.

On 7-9 July Russian terrorists planed an assassination attempt on Ukraine’s interior minister Arsen Avakov during his visit in ATO’s zone. Diversionist Igor Bezler was assassin’s paymaster, Zoryan Shkiryak, an adviser to the Interior Minister, said at the briefing in Kyiv.

Political expert Artem Goryachkin thinks Ukrainian government’s idea to unite Crimea and Kherson region will work in a “government in exile” format. It will be more a media activity because there are no real instruments to influence on the Crimea’s side, the expert thinks.
