U.S. Department of State and USAID: US allocates $ 28 million for internally displaced persons in Ukraine

Kyiv, May 20, 2016. The US government will provide an additional $ 28 million for the needs of people affected by the Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine. This was stated by Nancy I. Jackson, Deputy Assistant Secretary, US State Department Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, at a briefing at Ukrainian Crisis Media Center. “We have seen the devastating impact that the conflict in Donbas has on innocent people in Ukraine. We also met with non-governmental organizations whose work is a guarantee that these people have something to eat, drink and a place to live in,” she added.

Ms. Jackson noted that US Department of State provides $ 11 million of these funds. The money will go to international organizations for purchasing medicines, foods, hygiene products, etc. for internally displaced persons. According to Rob Jenkins, Deputy Assistance Administrator, USAID Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance, the agency will provide another $ 17 million. “Five million dollars will go to the immediate need for food and vitamins for internally displaced persons. Another $ 12 million will be given to international and local non-governmental organizations to build temporary shelters, finance priority needs of people, as well as psychological support, especially – for children, ” detailed Mr. Jenkins.

Ms. Jackson reminded that the USA has provided 112 million US dollars of humanitarian aid since the conflict began. She also underlined that, according to the latest figures, 3.1 million people in the east need food, water and medicines.
