Conflict chronology, August 10 – 16, 2017: Militants shell residential areas again

On August 10 the intensity of militants’ attacks decreased. In Luhansk sector, militants shelled Ukrainian positions near Novotoshkinske, Krymske, Shchastia, and Novooleksandrivka with mortars and grenade launchers. In Mariupol sector, militants used grenade launchers and mortars in Pavlopil-Shyrokyne frontline. Besides, sniper groups were also involved. In Donetsk sector, militants attacked Ukrainian positions with machine guns near Maiorske. One Ukrainian serviceman was killed in land mine blast, another one was wounded as a result of sniper fire.

The combat intensity started increasing on August 11. Nine ceasefire violations were recorded in Luhansk sector. Militants used mortars near Shchastia, Syze, Novotoshkinske, and Krymske. At Bakhmut road, the enemy fired more than thirty 120 mm mortar rounds. In Donetsk sector, most of the attacks took place near Avdiivka, where militants used grenade launchers, heavy machine guns, and mortars. In Mariupol sector, militants violated the ceasefire six times. They used light weapons and mortars in Hnutove, Lebedynske, Vodiane, and Shyrokyne. Nine Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and one was killed that day.

On August 12, Luhansk sector remained the leader in the number of attacks. Militants violated the ceasefire ten times, mostly at Bakhmut road and in Popasna district, using mortars and armored vehicles. In Donetsk sector, militants hit Novoluhanske’s residential blocks. Two residential buildings and a car were damaged; the villagers suffered no harm. In Bakhmut district, a tractor was blown up by an explosive device; the wounded driver was hospitalized. In Mariupol sector, militants conducted four mortar attacks in Novotroiitske, Pavlopil, and Vodiane. One Ukrainian soldier was killed in action, five were wounded.

On August 13, one building was damaged as a result of the hostile shelling of Maryinka’s residential blocks involving grenade launchers and mortars. In Mariupol sector, militants used mortars in Chermalyk and small arms in Vodiane and Shyrokyne. In Donetsk sector, militants conducted eleven attacks; three of them involved heavy weapons. Russian proxies and Ukrainian troops were exchanging fire in Avdiivka for more than nine hours. In Luhansk sector, the fighting continued near Bakhmut road and in Popasna district. Three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded as a result of hostilities that day.

On August 14, militants continued attacking Ukrainian positions near Avdiivka. Militants were shooting from four different directions simultaneously. Mortars were involved in five out of twelve attacks in Donetsk sector. In the direction of Luhanske, Verkhniotoretske, and Kamianka, militants used armored vehicles. In Luhansk sector, militants used light weapons in Krymske and Zolote. In Mariupol sector, militants violated the ceasefire ten times. In particular, they shelled Maryinka’s residential areas. Also, militants violated the ceasefire in Novotroitske, Talakivka, Hnutove, and Shyrokyne. Eight Ukrainian soldiers were wounded as a result of hostilities.

On August 15, ten ceasefire violations were recorded in Luhansk sector. Militants used mortars in Popasna district and at Bakhmut road. In Donetsk sector, militants violated the ceasefire nine times. Russian proxies used small arms, mortars, grenade launchers, and heavy machine guns in their attack on Verkhniotoretske. They also used mortars to shell Ukrainian positions in Zaitseve and near Svitlodarsk. Avdiivka suffered four militants’ attacks. In Mariupol sector, the enemy carried out fourteen attacks. They used mortars in Krasnohorivka and near Dokuchayevsk, and shelled Pavlopil with mortars and Grad-Partizan rocket launchers. Four Ukrainian soldiers were wounded that day.

On August 16, the enemy carried out seven attacks in Luhansk sector. The hottest spot was near Novooleksandrivka. Armed hostilities covered the entire frontline in Donetsk sector. There were twenty-one attacks, most notably near Avdiivka, where the enemy massively used mortars and armored vehicles. In Zaitseve, militants’ bullets and shell fragments hit the residential area. In Mariupol sector, militants violated the ceasefire seven times. In Starohnativka, militants used mortars, a tank, and 152-mm guns. In Vodiane, militants used 122-mm guns and the Grad-P rocket launcher to shell Ukrainian positions. They also fired at our positions in Pavlopil, Chermalyk, and Maryinka. As a result of hostilities, one Ukrainian serviceman was killed, four were wounded.
