Over the last week Russia-backed militants fired upon the Ukrainian troops\u2019 positions from Minsk-proscribed 82-mm and 120-mm mortars as well as from grenade launchers, heavy machine guns and small arms. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, Russia\u2019s proxies launched eight 82-mm mortar rounds near Shumy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the area of responsibility of the operational-tactic command \u201cSkhid\u201d (East), Russia-backed militants fired from 82-mm mortars on the outskirts of Avdiyivka and Shyrokyne. Until then Russia should not be allowed to re-enter the G7, Zelenskyi told Canadian news journal \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-ukrainian-president-praises-relationship-with-trudeau-but-mum-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (\u0432\u0456\u0434\u043a\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0454\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0443 \u043d\u043e\u0432\u0456\u0439 \u0432\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0446\u0456)\">The Globe and Mail<\/a>\u201d in an interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the U.S. President Donald Trump said he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/news\/2020\/05\/31\/7253879\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (\u0432\u0456\u0434\u043a\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0454\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0443 \u043d\u043e\u0432\u0456\u0439 \u0432\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0446\u0456)\">intends to invite Russia<\/a>\u00a0to join the G7 meeting this coming September, Prime Ministers of Canada and the UK reacted by stating that they will not let Russia re-join the G7 until Ukraine gets its lands back.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJustin Trudeau said on June 1 that there is no chance for Russia to return to the G7 until the full restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine and we are grateful for that support \u2013 and I should say that there will be no resolution if the world doesn\u2019t keep the pressure on Russia in that regard,\u201d Zelenskyi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To remind, in late May Trump announced that the G7 summit was postponed until September 2020, he also said he would like to invite four more countries to join \u2013 Russia, Australia, India and South Korea. Ukraine ranks 16<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;among the 29 post-communist states that the \u201cNations in Transit 2020\u201d report assesses. It is the second best result of a country that once was part of the Soviet Union, the Baltic States scored best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When scoring the countries on a scale from one to seven, Freedom House experts look into seven categories: national democratic governance, local democratic governance, electoral process, independent media, civil society, judicial framework and independence, and corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Opinion polling: how Ukrainians remember the USSR, and how Russians do<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"690\" height=\"387\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 690 387'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SSSR.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-119981\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SSSR.png 690w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SSSR-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SSSR-192x108.png 192w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SSSR-384x216.png 384w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SSSR-364x205.png 364w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SSSR-561x315.png 561w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SSSR-608x341.png 608w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KMIS) suggests that 50 per cent of Ukrainians do not regret the dissolution of the USSR, while over 30 per cent do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opinion poll was held between May 24 and 31. Thirty five per cent of respondents said Ukraine benefited from being made part of the USSR rather than suffered damages, 28 per cent said harm outweighed. At the same time, 25.5 per cent of respondents opted for the option \u201chard to say what prevailed\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the West of the country, the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians do not regret the dissolution of the Soviet Union (69 vs 15 per cent); the ratio changes in central Ukraine \u2013 51 vs 32 per cent. In the South and East those regretting outnumber those who aren\u2019t: 41.5-49 vs 35-39 per cent depending on the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dynamics since 2013.&nbsp;<\/strong>Sociologists of KMIS compared the data against their survey\u2019s results of May 2013 (excluding Crimea and the occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk), the number of respondents seeing benefits rather than harm decreased from 35 to 48 per cent since 2013. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, respondents opting for \u201cdamaging\u201d, grew in number from 18 to 28 per cent, those undecided decreased from 31 to 25.5 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Russia<\/strong>&nbsp;the situation is almost reverse: 65 per cent of Russians regret the dissolution of the USSR, 26 per cent do not. The single-day tally of new cases then started growing. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said the next wave of the coronavirus pandemic is emerging in Ukraine. \u201cWe are actually at the start of the next wave of coronavirus infections, call it the first or the second wave. Our only savior is social distancing, disinfection, and mask wearing,\u201d the Prime Minister said at an extraordinary cabinet meeting.
