On April 4, the Ukrainian troops recorded one attack by Russia-backed militants. The situation is under control, Ukraine\u2019s Joint Forces command reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) to Ukraine recorded a more than tenfold increase in the number of ceasefire violations in Donbas. On April 2, the OSCE SMM recorded a total of 1,021 ceasefire violations in the combat zone including over 500 explosions.\u00a0\u00a0Last week, we covered the escalation in Donbas and the threat of a new wave of violence by Russia: \u201cRussia masses troops near Ukraine border. They purposefully confused it with the near-front village Oleksandrivka located in the government-controlled area. Oleksandrivske, where the tragic incident happened, is located in the rear area of the occupation forces. That\u2019s not possible for an unmanned aerial vehicle of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to reach that far.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>StopFake contacted a person in Oleksandrivske who confirmed that the child was killed by the explosion of ordnance that happened inside a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy confusing the village names, the occupation forces tried to hide the crime \u2013 the child\u2019s death, and blame it on the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to the White House readout of the call, President Biden affirmed the United States\u2019 unwavering support for Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia\u2019s ongoing aggression in the Donbas and Crimea. He emphasized his administration\u2019s commitment to revitalize the strategic partnership in support of President Zelenskyi\u2019s plan to tackle corruption and implement a reform agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The leaders spoke for 30 to 40 minutes, \u201cPolitico\u201d reported, citing a person with knowledge of the call. The conversation took place amid reports of a Russian military buildup in eastern Ukraine. The leaders also discussed Zelenskyi\u2019s anti-corruption efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Ukrainian media outlet \u201cUkrainska Pravda\u201d that cites a \u201cwell-informed source in the President\u2019s immediate circle\u201d, the leaders discussed the situation in Donbas in the first place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Office of the President of Ukraine, Zelenskyi also spoke of the Crimean Platform initiative and the upcoming first summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, the Crimean Platform is the only framework in which to address the restoration of sovereignty over Crimea and the need to protect the rights of Ukrainians in the occupied peninsula,\u201d president Zelenskyi is quoted as saying. He also invited President Biden to take part in the initiative\u2019s founding summit and visit Ukraine on Independence Day, the readout of the call released by the Office of the President of Ukraine states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the readout that the Ukrainian side released, President Biden said he looks forward to visiting Ukraine. The Ukrainian President underscored that a clear list of steps that would bring Ukraine closer to the NATO membership, would be also beneficial for the Alliance. President Biden vowed support for Ukraine\u2019s progress on the way towards the NATO membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EU pledges support for Ukraine in the face of Russia\u2019s aggression<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 700 394'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/YES-i-UKrayina.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-138339\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/YES-i-UKrayina.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/YES-i-UKrayina-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/YES-i-UKrayina-364x205.jpg 364w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/YES-i-UKrayina-608x342.jpg 608w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a phone call with the Foreign Affairs Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell pledged the EU support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine against a backdrop of mounting tensions in Donbas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKey issue of our call today with Josep Borrell was Russia\u2019s aggravation of the security situation. \u2018EU is behind you\u2019, Josep Borrell said expressing support of Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and invited me to take part in EU Foreign Affairs Council on April 19,\u201d Foreign Minister Kuleba twitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, the EU foreign policy chief twitted about the phone call. \u201cFollowing with severe concern the Russian military activity surrounding Ukraine,\u201d Borrell stated. He also pledged EU\u2019s unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zelenskyi\u2019s war on contraband: sanctions on 10 biggest smugglers&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"690\" height=\"426\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 690 426'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/kontrabanda.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-138345\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/kontrabanda.jpg 690w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/kontrabanda-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/kontrabanda-608x375.jpg 608w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 2, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine rolled out individual sanctions on \u201cUkraine\u2019s ten largest smugglers\u201d. Also, the Council adopted the decision ordering temporary suspension from office of over 100 employees of the State Customs Service including 17 directors of the regional customs offices and customs posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sanctions include a freeze of accounts and assets, trade restrictions, suspension and revocation of licenses etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a video address, explaining the Council decision, President Zelenskyi said the individual sanctions are being imposed in Ukraine for the first time. Blocked are the assets of Ukraine\u2019s 10 biggest smugglers identified by the Security Service and the National Security and Defense Council.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Customs revenue fails by UAH 150 billion (approx. USD 5.3 billion) annually due to the contraband and corruption, said Head of the State Customs Service Pavlo Riabikin in a recent interview to the \u201cRadio NV\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sanctions against the Russian companies.<\/strong>&nbsp;The Council also imposed sanctions on 79 companies, 11 of which are Russian.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sanctioned Russian companies include the federal agency \u201cRossotrudnichestvo\u201d, Volga-Dnepr airlines, \u201cZviozdochka\u201d shipyard (Murmansk oblast, Russia), \u201cSnabcom\u201d LLC (Tula), \u201cDalzavod\u201d shipyard (Primorsky Krai), \u201c514\u201d aircraft maintenance facility (Tver oblast), and \u201c322\u201d aircraft maintenance facility (Primorsky Krai).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The restrictions also extend to the Russian companies in occupied Crimea \u2013 \u201cSpetsagregaty\u201d plant, \u201cZavod Molot-Mekhanika\u201d LLC, \u201cSevmormash-2M\u201d LLC, and the \u201cSevastopol Aggregate Plant\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How Ukraine is fighting COVID-19<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"485\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 700 485'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/corona.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-132704\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/corona.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/corona-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/corona-608x421.jpg 608w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ukraine, the spread of the coronavirus is picking up steam. On Sunday, April 4, Ukraine recorded 10,179 new cases, 254 deaths, and 4,946 recoveries. Typically, the weekend counts are lower. Last week, Ukraine hit record high in both daily cases &#8211; 20,000, and deaths \u2013 over 400.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 4, 3,275 patients were hospitalized, and 1,752 persons were discharged. The new cases include 431 children, and 152 healthcare workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the pandemic, Ukraine has reported 1,755,888 cases, 1,352,139 recoveries, and 34,587 deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Strict lockdown.<\/strong>&nbsp;Ukraine is under an \u201cadaptive quarantine\u201d, where each region enacts its own restrictions based on the local coronavirus situation. The number of the \u201cred zones\u201d grows. Starting April 5, schools and kindergartens closed in Kyiv and Kyiv region. Public transportation services are only available to the critical infrastructure workers with a pass.
