Chornobyl by the numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the key numbers of the Chornobyl disaster, provided by the\u00a0Ukrainian Institute of National Memory<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0BBC<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 30 plant workers <\/strong>died shortly after the reactor explosion, and from acute radiation syndrome in the first months after the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

500,000 people <\/strong>have died from radiation effects, a panel of independent experts say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8.5 million people <\/strong>across Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were exposed to high radiation levels in the next days after the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

90,784 people<\/strong> were evacuated from 81 villages and towns in Ukraine by the end of summer 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 600,000 clean-up workers <\/strong>(also known as \u201cliquidators\u201d) were involved in fighting the fire and cleaning the debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2,293 <\/strong>towns<\/strong> <\/strong>and<\/strong> <\/strong>villages<\/strong> <\/strong>in<\/strong> <\/strong>Ukraine<\/strong>, <\/strong>with a total population of 2.6 million people were contaminated with radionuclides.  <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

200,000 square kilometers of land<\/strong> were contaminated with radioactive material, including 52,000 square kilometers of agricultural land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film puts a spotlight on the first environmental protests that ravaged Soviet Ukraine after the Chornobyl nuclear power plant disaster. They started in Kyiv, and swept across the country \u2013 from Netishyn in Western Ukraine, a town near the construction site of the Khmelnytska nuclear power plant, to Zaporizhzhia, where students eco-anarchists climbed the chimneys of the coke works to stop the highly-polluting production.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
