Britain and its American allies had attempted to reorder the world \u2013 most notably in Afghanistan and Iraq \u2013 and we had failed. So, in London, a new doctrine emerged. It was not about intervening, but cajoling. A form of internationalist \u201cnudge\u201d.<br \/>\nDaily Telegraph:<br \/>\nHowever, the author thinks such policy didn\u2019t bring any results. \u201cYet soft power is simply a euphemism for no power. Or rather, it\u2019s a euphemism for our unwillingness to use the power that we have.\u201d The world is currently on fire. We know the trajectory. We know where it came from, we know the timing and it was exactly when this aircraft disappeared from the radars,\u201d Kerry told.<br \/>\nHe said it is early to make final conclusions. He underlines, everything points out Russia should bear the responsibility for what have been done.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/storyline\/ukraine-plane-crash\/full-meet-press-interview-john-kerry-n160591\" target=\"_blank\"> www.nbcnews.com <\/a><br \/>\nThe Times: The wreckage of Flight MH17 shows damage indicating that it was struck by a missile close to a forward cargo area of the plane, experts said yesterday after studying photographs taken by The Times at the crash scene.<br \/>\n\u201cThe damage looks to be in keeping with what you would expect to see from a fragmentation warhead,\u201d said a defence expert from a leading center anonymously. \u201cThe type of wreckage and any fragments could be very valuable identification mark know what was the type of the missile.\u201d \u201cAnother expert in military aviation made the same conclusions. There was a big external blackening and the wreckage is peppered with signs of shrapnel. The outer aluminum structure was punctured and these marks correspond with the missile\u2019s trajectory,\u201d the edition writes.<br \/>\nThe author underlines that following how foreign experts conduct their investigation, by trying to fix a catastrophe\u2019s image, make interviews with bystanders, they support the theory that the plane was shot down by one or more missiles at the territory, where Ukrainian air forces were holding their operations.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/tto\/news\/world\/europe\/article4153074.ece\" target=\"_blank\"> www.thetimes.co.uk <\/a><br \/>\nChief editor Julia Ioffe points out how Russia\u2019s media broadcast the catastrophe with Malaysia plane. \u201cThe Russian public has a totally different understanding of what happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 17,\u201d she writes. \u201cAll of Russian television and state-friendly papers pushing one line: the pro-Russian separatists we\u2019ve been supporting all these months couldn\u2019t have done this,\u201d the author writes. Or newspapers try \u201cto peddle conspiracy theories.\u201d For example, that MH17 is actually MH370, that Malaysia Airlines flight that disappeared into the Indian Ocean, or it was loaded with bodies beforehand.<br \/>\nFloriana Fossato, a longtime scholar of Russian media, says that this, coupled with the media\u2019s conscious use of the Soviet language of crisis\u2014\u201ctraitors,\u201d \u201cfascists,\u201d \u201cfifth columns\u201d\u2014quickly brings to the surface the psychological demons of a society massively traumatized by the 20th century, traumas that society has never adequately addressed. And so they lock onto Putin for protection.<br \/>\nBut in addition to the Russian public not clamoring for decisive action from Putin, there is a far more serious problem. As The New Yorker&#8217;s David Remnick noted in his column on the crash of MH17, Putin has become prisoner to his own propaganda machine, much as he\u2019s become prisoner of the rebels he thought were doing his geopolitical dirty work in Ukraine.<br \/>\n\u201cNone of this looks very good for the West, which is clearly hoping that MH17 is the thing that will bring Putin to his senses and get him to agree to some kind of off-ramp, or, at least, a deescalation. But that\u2019s hard to do if neither your public nor your political class see it as a game-changer or as anything that should force Russia to end this game,\u201d the author concludes.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/node\/118782\" target=\"_blank\"> www.newrepublic.com <\/a><br \/>\nThe latest US sanctions hit big Russian companies hard. \u201cIt is hardly surprising, then, that Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev spoke of a return to the Cold War and President Vladimir Putin warned that sanctions &#8220;usually have a boomerang effect,\u201d journalists write for Der Spiegel journal.<br \/>\nThe United States and Europe last week announced the imposition of stronger sanctions against Russia in response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. German industry may be among the losers. German industry&#8217;s Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations believes that the crisis could endanger up to 25,000 jobs in Germany. \u201cWere a broad recession to befall Russia, German growth could sink by 0.5 percent,\u201d according to a Deutsche Bank study.<br \/>\nThe German Chambers of Commerce and Industry estimate that up to a quarter of German companies that do business abroad could be affected. \u201cAnd the risks are significant, with large fines threatening those who violate the American sanctions, whether knowingly or not.\u201d<br \/>\nStefan Fittkau, who heads the Moscow office of EagleBurgmann, the Bavaria-based industrial sealing specialists, says company sales have already plunged by 30 percent. &#8220;Orders have been cancelled or delayed &#8212; or we simply don&#8217;t receive them anymore,&#8221; he says. Novatek, Russia&#8217;s second largest natural gas company, for example, had hired EagleBurgmann to take care of seals at a vast liquefied natural gas facility on the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia. Now, though, doing business with Novatek is no longer allowed.<br \/>\n&#8220;In the end, both sides, the Russians and the Europeans, will lose,&#8221; says Frank Schauff, head of the Association of European Businesses in Moscow.<br \/>\n&#8220;Russian customers have begun looking for suppliers outside of Europe,&#8221; says Ulrich Ackermann, a foreign trade expert with the German engineering association VDMA. &#8220;They are concerned that European companies, because of the threat of increased sanctions, won&#8217;t be able to deliver.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/international\/business\/german-economy-hit-by-us-eu-sanctions-on-russia-a-982075.html\" target=\"_blank\"> www.spiegel.de <\/a><\/p>\n<p>US President Barak Obama, speaking on Ukrainian crisis in Washington, called on Russia to rein in the rebel fighters, who he said had treated remains poorly and removed evidence from the site, and persuade them to cooperate with the international investigation.<br \/>\n\u201cRussia and President Putin are responsible for forcing rebels to cooperate with the investigation. It\u2019s the least they can do,\u201d Obama underlines.<br \/>\nHe also stressed rebels and Russia bear a responsibility for crashing Boeing 777.<br \/>\n\u201cIt poses a question, what exactly they are trying to hide?\u201d Obama asks.<br \/>\nCommenting on future consequences for Russia, Barak Obama says it is merely \u201cthe price for Russian behavior will increase.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2014\/07\/21\/world\/europe\/ukraine-malaysia-airlines-crash\/index.html?hpt=hp_c1\" target=\"_blank\"> edition.cnn.com <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said in comments published today that Russia was likely behind the downing of a Malaysian airliner as such an operation takes professionals and not \u201cdrunken gorillas.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cVery professional personnel is needed to find targets and fire this missile,\u201d he told a German newspaper about the suspected shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine which claimed 298 lives.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is possible that these kinds of people came from Russia,\u201d he was quoted as saying by the newspaper in comments translated into German.<br \/>\nYatsenyuk suggested it was unlikely pro-Russian separatists alone had fired a missile, as \u201cwe known that such such systems can\u2019t be operated by drunken gorillas\u201c, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported him as saying.<br \/>\nThe premier also said that Ukrainian forces had never used missiles in the conflict and that \u201call of Ukraine\u2019s surface-to-air missiles are stationed elsewhere. We are prepared to make public all evidence and locations.\u201d<br \/>\nYatsenyuk stressed that the conflict in Ukraine was not a civil war, but \u201ca Russian-led intervention\u201c, describing it as \u201cRussian-led, Russian-backed, Russian-financed and Russian-organised.\u201d<br \/>\nHe added that \u201cnow is the time to stop Russian aggression.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/politik\/ausland\/europa\/ukrainischer-ministerpraesident-jazenjuk-im-gespraech-13054248.html?printPagedArticle=true#pageIndex_2\" target=\"_blank\"> www.faz.net <\/a><br \/>\nAustrian Der Standart informs Australia has prepared a draft UN resolution with demands to all participants in eastern Ukraine, including separatists who have the remains of bodies and wreckage of Malaysian Airline MH17 at their territory, to fully cooperate with international experts and do not meddle with evidences. The newspaper also underlines only Russians could veto this UN resolution. The edition from Vienna quotes US secretary John Kerry as saying EU should toughen sanctions against Putin\u2019s regime. It is also underlined the West have no doubts pro-Russian separatists have shot down Malaysia jet on Thursday near Donetsk using missiles from Russia.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/derstandard.at\/suche\/?query=ukraine\" target=\"_blank\"> derstandard.at <\/a><\/p>\n<p>German Christian Democratic Union and Social-Democratic party propose to send peacekeeping mission to eastern Ukraine after the tragedy with Malaysia Airline, which was allegedly shot down by pro-Russian separatists by coincidence, Der Spiegel informs. Hans-Peter Bartels, who heads the German parliament\u2019s Defense Committee, said \u201cUN peacekeeping mission could control joint decision.\u201d Rolf M\u00fctzenich, deputy head of the German Social Democratic Party, also thinks \u201cblue helmets\u201d, who could control situation and force parties of the conflict to a ceasefire.<br \/>\nCDU expert in foreign affairs Andreas Schockenhoff said German Bundeswehr should join UN peacekeeping mission. \u201cIf the mission is planning to be sent, Germany should take part in it,\u201d he told Rheinische Post.<br \/>\nMoreover, Russia as a permanent member of UN, could veto the idea of sending UN peacekeeping mission, Der Spiegel explains. Thanks why we need to make conclusions towards those who support terrorists,\u201d Sikorski underlines.<br \/>\n\u201cAs Ukraine registered the first military successes, Russia has escalated the situation immediately and supplied separatists in the east with more sophisticated weapon systems. That\u2019s why Russia has crossed Europe\u2019s \u201cred line\u201d. Two weeks ago we demanded Russia gave up control of the Ukrainian-Russian border. The Netherlands can\u2019t do anything by themselves. \u201cSend special forces to take bodies will be a very risky act, which can\u2019t be realized by any of countries along.\u201d<br \/>\nSo far, the reactions of Western governments are restricted by helpless appeals to Russian President Vladimir Putin: He must &#8220;do more&#8221;. This is also a declaration of bankruptcy. There are the Western governments that would have to do more &#8211; at least for their own self-esteem&#8217;s sake.<br \/>\nPutin, Tageszeitung adds, must stay out and leave the righty to respond appropriately for the directly affected countries. \u201cAfter the terrorist attack on September 11 in the US, the allies responded immediately.
