\u041en January 29, Ukraine commemorates the defenders of Ukrainian People’s Republic (Ukrainian state in the period 1917\u20131920), who died on this day in 1918 in an unequal battle near the village of Kruty (Chernihiv region), defending the right of Ukrainians to live in their own state, a struggle Ukraine continues this very day, repelling overwhelming forces of the same aggressor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back then, a few hundred defenders stopped the several thousand army of the Russian invaders, protecting Kyiv for the time needed for the evacuation of the government and the conclusion of the Brest Peace, which de facto meant the international recognition of Ukrainian independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is called the “Ukrainian Thermopylae” and one of the first major fights of Ukrainians for a free future. Every year, Ukraine honors the heroes of Kruty, and while Ukraine continues successfully resisting the full-scale Russian invasion, this event has acquired new meanings, which were discussed at the UCMC press center\u2019s event, and which are covered in this episode of Ukraine In Flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
