On May 18\u201320, 1944, the Soviet regime committed one of its most terrible crimes \u2014 the deportation of Crimean Tatars. The indigenous people of Crimea were unfairly stigmatized as \u201eNazi collaborators\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 200,000 Crimean Tatars were deported to Central Asia. Having several minutes to pack up, they were forced to travel for weeks in inhuman conditions with their property confiscated by the Soviets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the occupation of the Peninsula in 2014, Russia continued the crimes of the Soviet government. As Crimean Tatars keep fighting for their right to live freely on their own land, the world marks the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
