In the special project “More than Cities. The Code of Resilience,” the Ukraine Crisis Media Center continues to uncover the depth of Ukrainian cities and regions through their history, culture, and the people who shaped Ukrainian statehood. This episode is dedicated to the Cherkasy region\u2014a land often called the heart of Ukraine, as it was right here that the ideas of freedom, statehood, and national identity were born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cherkasy region is the birthplace of Taras Shevchenko, Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Viacheslav Chornovil, Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky, Mykhailo Starytsky, and many other prominent Ukrainians. It is home to Kaniv with the Kobzar\u2019s grave, Chyhyryn\u2014the first capital of the Hetmanate, the residence of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, and the Elijah Church, which became one of the symbols of Ukrainian statehood. No less unique are the Trypillian settlements near Lehedzyne, Talianky, and Dobrovody\u2014some of the oldest sites of European civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cherkasy region is a land where Ukrainian statehood was born, Cossackdom was formed, and the history of the Ukrainian nation was written. It is a place where the memory of ancient civilizations, Cossack glory, and the legacy of people who defined Ukraine’s path to independence intertwine. This is exactly why the Cherkasy region rightfully remains one of the main symbols of Ukrainian history and national resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
