We, the team of Ukraine Crisis Media Center (UCMC), are indignant about the actions of Advisor to the Interior Minister\u00a0of Ukraine\u00a0Anton Gerashchenko and \u201cMyrotvorets\u201d web site\u00a0that\u00a0released and\u00a0put in open access<\/a>\u00a0contact phone numbers\u00a0and email addresses\u00a0of all Ukrainian and international journalists\u00a0who\u00a0received accreditation to the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” (\u201cDPR\u201d) in 2014-2016.<\/p>\n

The list has allegedly got to Gerashchenko and \u201cMyrotvorets\u201d web site as a result of the hacker attack on the \u201cDPR\u201d information data base. \u201cMyrotvorets\u201d web site justifies release of the contact details with the fact that in their opinion these international journalists\u00a0present on\u00a0the list are cooperating with militants of the terrorist organization.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian and international journalists from renowned European, U.S. and other media outlets got under attack. UCMC cooperated with many of them. Many of them were providing objective coverage of events and\u00a0in particular of the situation\u00a0on occupied territories in international media\u00a0often\u00a0risking their lives.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian journalists\u00a0have already released a statement<\/a>\u00a0in which they condemn the actions of Gerashchenko and of \u201cMyrotvorets\u201d web site. The letter was signed by some international journalists as well.<\/p>\n

UCMC team has been helping international journalists in their work in Ukraine since March 2014 on entire territory of Ukraine as well as in the ATO zone. We are assisting\u00a0the media representatives in preparation of\u00a0the\u00a0application\u00a0to get the ATO press card as well as a pass to cross the line of contact.<\/p>\n

We are convinced that it is the objective and unbiased coverage of events in eastern Ukraine by international\u00a0journalists that is\u00a0the best tool to combat the Russian propaganda.<\/p>\n

We understand that the work of international journalists in the self-proclaimed \u201cDPR\u201d and \u201cLPR\u201d are crucial to get the international attention to the war in eastern Ukraine as well as to produce the materials that are highly trusted by the audience around the globe.<\/p>\n

We realize that with the conflict escalation access to the occupied territories\u00a0for Ukrainian media\u00a0was considerably restricted. In this uneasy situation\u00a0these are the western journalists that being a party outside the conflict often had higher chances to get to the occupied territories and present what is going on there. UCMC has been always providing them with maximum support possible.<\/p>\n

We are of the opinion that Ukraine\u2019s citizens residing\u00a0in the occupied territories of the self-proclaimed \u201cDPR\u201d and \u201cLPR\u201d have the right to be present in the media space, the right to adequate coverage of their problems in particular humanitarian and social ones.<\/p>\n

We realize that it is the ignorance and lack of will to get to know\u00a0what\u00a0the life of people across the contact line is splits\u00a0the Ukrainian society and unjustly de-humanizes\u00a0those people, diving Ukrainians into \u201cfriends\u201d and \u201cfoes\u201d.<\/p>\n

We are convinced that presence of international journalists on occupied territories as well as international humanitarian NGOs and monitoring missions is\u00a0a\u00a0guarantee to reinforced security of citizens in the face of armed persons.<\/p>\n

We are aware that accreditation of Ukrainian and international journalists\u00a0at \u201cDPR\u201d and \u201cLPR\u201d are a necessary condition for safe journalist work on the territory of self-proclaimed republics and by no means can be considered \u201ccollaboration\u201d with terrorists.<\/p>\n

We are convinced that accreditation to \u201cDPR\u201d for\u00a0journalists\u00a0of international media outlets does not violate Ukraine\u2019s legislation and is not a threat to Ukraine\u2019s state security.<\/p>\n

We are aware that the fact of accreditation to the \u201cDPR\u201d and \u201cLPR\u201d for foreign journalists does not influence the editorial policy of international media outlets and does not\u00a0lead toincrease in number of \u201canti-Ukrainian\u201d materials.<\/p>\n

Instead we consider that rendering public private addresses and phone numbers of journalists by \u201cMyrotvorets\u201d web site is a crime. It also puts the journalists in question under additional security threat on the part of\u00a0radicalized members of Ukrainian society.<\/p>\n

The list made public creates obstacles for the journalists\u00a0to exercise their rights to\u00a0conduct\u00a0professional activities.<\/p>\n

It contradicts the principle of freedom of press in the combat action\u00a0zone and in occupied territories.<\/p>\n

UCMC calls upon Anton Gerashchenko and administrators of the web site \u201cMyrotvorets\u201d to immediately put down from open access the data of international and Ukrainian journalists.<\/p>\n
