{"id":66528,"date":"2017-01-31T18:01:38","date_gmt":"2017-01-31T18:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uacrisis.org\/?p=52058"},"modified":"2017-02-26T17:53:16","modified_gmt":"2017-02-26T15:53:16","slug":"52058-debaltseve-une-defaite-ou-une-victoire-strategique","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/en\/52058-debaltseve-une-defaite-ou-une-victoire-strategique","title":{"rendered":"Debaltseve: defeat or strategic victory?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"single-title\"><\/h1>\n<div class=\"single-content row\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Fights for Debaltseve foothold were one of the biggest combats in Donbas. Thousands of soldiers, hundreds of units of equipment and heavy artillery took part on both sides.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Violent phase lasted almost a month from January 25 to February 18, 2015, and included massive artillery attacks, close-range firefights and even tank combat. Negotiation process in the capital of Belarus took place at the same time. It ended on February 12 by so-called \u201cMinsk-2\u201d agreements. Since then the frontline has remained unchanged for two years. Ukrainian troops advanced at the Svitlodarsk bulge towards Debaltseve in late 2016. Ukrainian authorities claim it does not contradict Minsk agreements, as from the very beginning the agreements supposed that Debaltseve stayed under control of Ukraine. Militants switched over to active offensive at the Svitlodarsk bulge near Debaltseve at the end of 2016. Ukrainian troops deterred the attack and overrun several positions of the enemy. Ukrainian government says it does not violate Minsk agreements, because according to them Debaltseve is supposed to belong to Ukraine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>UCMC<\/em> <em>prepared an exclusive about one of the largest and most contradictory military operations of Ukrainian-Russian war.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload alignnone wp-image-52060\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 600 471'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ato-map.png\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ato-map.png 1024x, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ato-map-300x236.png 300x, https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ato-map-768x603.png 768x\" alt=\"ato-map\" width=\"600\" height=\"471\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Beginning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Ministry of Defense, in the second half of January separatists threw all their troops to expand the territory of \u201crepublics\u201d. The offensive was planned in three directions simultaneously: Shchastia-Triokhizbenka in Luhansk region, Debaltseve and Mariupol in Donetsk region. So-called \u201cDebaltseve salient\u201d, which wedged into the territory of self-proclaimed \u201cDonetsk people\u2019s republic\u201d for several kilometers, became the main direction of attack. General Staff adds that occupation of Artemivsk, Kramatorsk and even Kharkiv were separatists\u2019 ultimate goal for Debaltseve offensive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<em>\u201cIf we didn\u2019t defend this salient, we would incur losses in other sector. The adversary wouldn\u2019t have stopped. The situation then made them risk it all. First of all, they wanted to create another \u201centrapment\u201d to destabilize the situation in Ukraine as much as possible. So I believe we had good grounds for our actions. Footholds are always held to neutralize troops and equipment and to prevent expansion. If we withdrew these troops, the enemy wouldn\u2019t stop, and we would have nothing to stop them. They would achieve their goal using our troops and seize Artemivsk and Kramatorsk, advancing toward Kharkiv. So our main task was inflicting large losses to make the enemy abandon their plans.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52071\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52071\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-52071 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 600 480'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/03106026-e1485882796606.jpg\" alt=\"03106026\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yevhen Ostrianskyi, deputy chief of Administration of military strategic analysis of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Separatists started active offensive on the outskirts of Debaltseve on January 25. General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine says 4,700 Ukrainian troops, 500 soldiers of the National Guard, Security Service of Ukraine and the Ministry of Internal Affairs were concentrated in the vicinity of the Debaltseve salient as of early February 2015. They were opposed by approximately 19,000 soldiers of militants including up to eight battalion tactical teams and artillery elements of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Loss of Vuhlehirsk and Lohvynove<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hostile offensive started with massive fire attacks at Ukrainian troops using artillery, MRLS\u2019, tanks and mortar launchers in the vicinity of Vuhlehirsk, Nikishyne, Ridkodub, Chornukhyne, Sanzharivka, Triotske, Popasna and immediate Debaltseve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On January 27 militants attacked ATO troops\u2019 positions in Vuhlehirsk southwest of Debaltseve. Ukrainian troops left the town after four days of fierce fighting. During withdrawal, 8<sup>th<\/sup> mechanized company of the 30<sup>th<\/sup> brigade planted mines on the road to Debaltseve and blocked it. Despite this, Oleksandr Syrskyi said that adversaries could use high-rise buildings to adjust fire after the loss of Vuhlehirsk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was during fighting for Vuhlehirsk that Russian ground attack aircrafts flying over our troops at critically low height were observed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cGenerally speaking, the events in Debaltseve started when the 25<sup>th<\/sup> area defense battalion &#8220;Kyivska Rus&#8221;<\/em> <em>left Nikishyne. Following this, checkpoint in Ridkodub was encircled. From what I saw I can say that these hardly were separatists fighting against us, but Russian regular troops. We seized identification documents from every casualty and gave them to counterintelligence. These were the documents of Russian troops \u2013 identity cards of officers and contract soldiers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52059\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52059\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-52059 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 600 403'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ato-e1485878439806.jpg\" alt=\"ato\" width=\"600\" height=\"403\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oleh Vysochan, 128th separate mountain infantry brigade<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the night of January 30, 2015 the enemy shot with aimed artillery and mortar fire at checkpoint 1301 located on the northwest outskirts of Vuhlehirsk. Using the results of the fire effect, up to five militants\u2019 tanks closely approached the checkpoint. Having tangible advantage, militants were gradually encircling the town. To avoid being trapped, our troops started leaving Vuhlehirsk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWe were shooting at hostile positions, staff gave us the coordinates and we were providing fire. We were working flat out. Can you imagine: in the days of the most intense firefights our guys were loading 140-160 projectiles. Each weighs 50 kg, so it\u2019s 7.5 tons. People were so exhausted! It lasted nine days, one and a half week of hard labor. There was word of mouth in the entire division that the command betrayed us. It was sabotage of the command, pure and simple: leaving us without backup and augmentation\u2026 Later I saw the equipment we sent from the battlefield for repairs, it was in stow position and nobody even touched it. There was the first request from the command on January 25, they asked to provide weapons and reinforcement. We were asking our commanders: will it come, at least something? They tentatively answered: yes. But nothing ever came\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52069\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52069\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-52069 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 600 337'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/1a1f5b9-150212125556-debaltseve-separatists-624x351-ap-e1485881892462.jpg\" alt=\"1a1f5b9-150212125556-debaltseve-separatists-624x351-ap\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serhiy Kuzniev \u2013 captain, 128th separate mountain infantry brigade, artillery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ukrainian Armed Forces left Ridkodub village on February 7, following heavy fighting. Militants took over Lohvynove on February 9. Road from Debaltseve to Artemivsk goes through the village, and it was used to supply ATO troops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Blocking the road to Artemivsk in Lohvynove gave separatists a chance to talk about full encirclement of ATO troops in Debaltseve. General Staff denies the fact of \u201centrapment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Retreat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So-called second Minsk agreements were reached on February 12. They envisaged absolute ceasefire effective from February 15.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oleksandr Zakharchenko, \u201cleader\u201d of self-proclaimed \u201cDonetsk people\u2019s republic\u201d called upon ATO troops to abandon their attempts to break through from Debaltseve. He promised the Armed Forces and other troops free passage if they leaved weapons and equipment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When relative armistice settled, separatists moved additional troops from other sectors to Debaltseve which they called their internal area. It resulted in even stronger attacks at ATO troops\u2019 strongholds. There were almost no additional reserves in Debaltseve to support ATO troops. Under such circumstances, the General Staff of the Armed Forces decided to withdraw all troops from the area before the morning of February 18. Troops were being withdrawn along two main routes, by small columns, under cover of armored personnel carriers and artillery, prohibiting movement of single vehicles. The first route followed through Debaltseve, Novohryhorivka and Troitske, the second one \u2013 through Debaltseve, Novohryhorivka, Nyzhnie Lozove and Luhanske.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<em>\u201cWe were based at the exit from Debaltseve near stela. First, we were in one encirclement near Ridkodub, and then got into another entrapment in Debaltseve.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>We were leaving the town under fire. We were riding vehicles and going on foot. We went through Myronivske to Artemivsk. It was a massacre. Many people died.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Volunteers were helping us with everything. Our country gave us uniform, rifles and some ammo, and all the rest we got from volunteers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>It looked like some soldiers weren\u2019t trained at all. They were drafted and sent to combat on the third day after that. In Debaltseve I saw Chechen militants pursuing several hundred our troops from the National Guard through the entire town. They couldn\u2019t resist. No training at all. Only trained soldiers managed to stop them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52066\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-52066 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 600 450'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/14_0-e1485881213931.jpg\" alt=\"14_0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serhiy, 1st company, 25th area defense battalion &#8220;Kyivska Rus&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following their retreat, ATO troops took up defense of the line along the Luhanka River. Militants were trying to attack new positions without much effect. In total, active hostilities in this area continued until February 21.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The General Staff of Ukraine is rather optimistic about the results of military operation near Debaltseve: \u201cThe enemy\u2019s intent to surround our troops and destroy them in the vicinity of Debaltseve failed as a result of coordinated action of ATO troops. Losses incurred by the enemy made them abandon further offensive. Sector C troops managed to defend a barrier line along the Luhanka River and mount defenses in Luhanske-Troitske-Popasna foothold, preventing militants from seizing new territories\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cThey are lying about having the plan of avoiding the entrapment. If they did, there would be no \u201cabandoned\u201d checkpoints, where no one warned the troops about the retreat. Those who could, found their way and left. And some just didn\u2019t leave&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Natalia Zotova, volunteer from Mukachevo<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the firefights in the vicinity of Debaltseve were over, General Staff provided information on losses among Ukrainian troops and separatists: \u201c110 troops died in combat in the vicinity of Debaltseve on January 15 \u2013 February 18. 270 servicemen were injured, seven captured and 18 were missing in action. During the entire period of Debaltseve salient defense 136 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 331 injured. We lost about 30 % of equipment. Adversary\u2019s losses amount to 870 people, up to 50 units of rocket artillery weapons, up to 110 units of combat vehicle arsenal and up to 24 units of automotive equipment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cI just can\u2019t understand why everyone says we surrendered Debaltseve. Come on, guys, we surrendered at least nine inhabited localities around Debaltseve. It is a piece of Ukrainian territory. Pro-Ukrainian people remained there. We abandoned them, though we promised them we wouldn\u2019t leave. What happened to them? How are they doing?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52067\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-52067 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 600 424'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/d-e1485881384323.jpg\" alt=\"d\" width=\"600\" height=\"424\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ihor Lukianov (nickname Macleod), 25th area defense battalion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both Ukrainian troops who survived Debaltseve and volunteers say that the numbers given by the General Staff are understated. For instance, soldiers from the 44<sup>th<\/sup> artillery brigade who were covering the retreat of Ukrainian army from Debaltseve and withdrawing bodies of the fallen, say that there were so many bodies that they packed huge artillery trucks full. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tsn.ua\/special-projects\/debaltsevo\/\">Ihor Lukianov<\/a>, soldier of the 25<sup>th<\/sup> area defense battalion, tells that only 14 people out of 100 in his battalion survived. \u201cBlack tulip\u201d search team is still coming across those who\u2019ll never come back home from Debaltseve field. It\u2019s fair to say that exact losses of Ukrainian army in Debaltseve foothold remain unknown, as well as those in Ilovaisk battle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cI don\u2019t know how people live there now. There\u2019s no life there, though Debaltseve is being rebuilt now. Plastic windows are being installed in buildings, people receive help and pensioners are paid money. But the town will never return to the way it used to be. People are intimidated. They are afraid of everything and they come back there out of despair. I never saw people smile. Everyone\u2019s scared, they turn off the lights in the evening. I want to live in Ukraine under Ukrainian laws, not under those that are in Debaltseve now. It\u2019s like in Soviet times, the situation is very similar. People are afraid to speak. Keep the voice down, hush, hush. I don\u2019t want to keep my voice down. I\u2019m a normal free person, and I want to have the right to speak my mind. That\u2019s why I don\u2019t want to go there, though it\u2019s my motherland. I don\u2019t want some Russian fellow to come and intrude my home. When I came to visit my town later, I saw such scum of the earth living in my house\u2026 My son came back, decided to live there. He didn\u2019t live because of Russian occupants. He was hit by an APC, they drove drunk and hit him. In October 2015.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tetiana Sobchuk, Debaltseve inhabitant, moved to Kharkiv.<img class=\"lazyload alignnone size-full wp-image-52068\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/vokzal.jpg\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/vokzal.jpg 600x,
