According to official reports,<strong> seven Ukrainian soldiers<\/strong> were killed and <strong>dozens wounded<\/strong> since fighting intensified. Media also report that <strong>2 <\/strong><strong>civilians<\/strong> were killed. Heavy shelling from separatist-controlled territories also affected residence areas. The town is cut off from electricity, heating and water. Here are key facts about this fighting:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Avdiivka is of strategic importance for both sides of the conflict. <\/strong>Anastasia Magazowa, correspondent for <em>Deutsche Welle<\/em> who is currently reporting from Avdiivka, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/uk\/%D0%BF%D0%B5%D1%80%D1%88%D0%B5-%D0%B2%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B5-%D0%B7%D0%B0%D0%B3%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BD%D1%8F-2017-%D0%B3%D0%BE-%D0%B7%D0%B0%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%BA%D0%BB%D1%96-%D0%B1%D0%BE%D1%97-%D0%B7%D0%B0-%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%B4%D1%96%D1%97%D0%B2%D0%BA%D1%83\/a-37329404\">writes<\/a> that it is a home town for <strong>Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant<\/strong> which is one of the biggest coke producers in Europe. Avdiivka town is also a <strong>major transport hub<\/strong> in Donetsk region. According to Minsk agreements, Avdiivka belongs to the government-controlled territory. Previously this town has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-32336354\">shelled on numerous occasions<\/a>. Map showing location of the town with regard to the frontline is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/viewer?mid=1myO3-jiBxE8DnGkzlTKFF-uKoiI&amp;ll=48.12496592878677%2C37.76378650927734&amp;z=11\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pro-Russian militants <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@DFRLab\/weekend-of-fighting-in-eastern-ukraine-3696042720f1#.rurhd6wtn\"><strong>started their attacks<\/strong><\/a><strong> near Avdiivka on 29 January. <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hromadske.ua\/posts\/sytuatsiia-v-avdiivtsi-shcho-vidbuvaietsia-zaraz-onlayn\">Since 31 January<\/a> the town has been shelled <strong>by Grad rockets<\/strong>. Residence districts in Avdiivka have been affected. Escalation is also reported near Mariupol and in Luhansk oblast. Donetsk-based social networks post numerous videos of Grad shelling from Donetsk and suburbs presumably i Avdiivka direction (<a href=\"https:\/\/vk.com\/donetsk?z=video-23502694_456239100%2F3c8278c7e3d1821250%2Fpl_wall_-23502694\">example<\/a>) but also signs that residential districts in Donetsk itself were affected by return shelling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Humanitarian situation in Avdiivka is very difficult. <\/strong>As a result of the shelling, critical infrastructure of the town has been destroyed. This has caused a <strong>humanitarian crisis<\/strong>: civilians have <strong>no water, electricity and heating<\/strong>, while the temperature is <strong>&#8211;<\/strong><strong>18 Celsius<\/strong> and keeps going lower. Mobile heating and food units have been set up in the city. Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine has already <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ICRC_ua\/status\/826373516052279296\">expressed concerns<\/a> and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-defense\/2166821-red-cross-sends-humanitarian-aid-to-avdiyivka.html\">sending humanitarian help<\/a>. Meanwhile, Ukraine is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-38807778\">preparing evacuation<\/a> \u2014up to 12,000 people can be evacuated, according to Ukrainian official sources. Reporters on the ground say that some inhabitants are already leaving the town.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Separatists&#8217; offence can be a response to Ukrainian maneuvers, some observers say. <\/strong>Christopher Miller, a correspondent for RFE\/RL, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/ukraine-russia-creeping-offensive-escalation-fighting\/28268104.html\">writes<\/a> in his coverage that \u201csince mid-December Ukraine&#8217;s armed forces have edged farther into parts of the grey zone in or near the war-worn cities of Avdiivka, Debaltseve, Dokuchaievsk, Horlivka, and Mariupol, shrinking the space between them and the separatist fighters&#8221;. Alexander Hug, principal deputy chief monitor of the OSCE SMM to Ukraine, quoted in RFE\/RL article, said that &#8220;direct result of forward moves is escalation in tension&#8221;. <strong>Ukrainian side<\/strong>, however, responds that troops were not violating Minsk agreements as they were not crossing the demarcation line and were moving inside the government-controlled (under Minsk deals) territory. Ukrainian regional administration also says that it is vital to have government control over towns in the grey zone to stop large-scale smuggling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ceasefire guarantees from <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/life.ru\/t\/%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B8\/966799\/dnr_ghotova_vviesti_riezhim_priekrashchieniia_oghnia_dlia_vosstanovlieniia_eliektrosnabzhieniia\"><strong>\u201cDPR\u201d<\/strong><\/a><strong> and <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gordonua.com\/news\/war\/postupila-garantiya-s-rossiyskoy-storony-o-prekrashchenii-obstrelov-avdeevki-s-1000-do-1700-zhebrivskiy-171630.html\"><strong>Russia<\/strong><\/a><strong> did not last. <\/strong>There were several attempts to establish ceasefire, but it has been broken after 15 minutes of less, according to Hromadske journalists who are <a href=\"http:\/\/hromadske.ua\/posts\/sytuatsiia-v-avdiivtsi-shcho-vidbuvaietsia-zaraz-onlayn\">reporting<\/a> from Avdiivka. Same information <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-defense\/2166515-militants-go-on-offensive-near-avdiyivka-zhebrivsky.html\">came<\/a> from Pavlo Zhebrivsky, the head of Ukraine&#8217;s military and civil administration in government-controlled Donetsk oblast.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Both sides blame each other for the escalation.<\/strong> The escalation took place during<strong> Ukraine\u2019s President Petro Poroshenko<\/strong> official visit to Germany, one of the key countries of Normandy format. Poroshenko <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-defense\/2166472-president-poroshenko-cuts-short-visit-to-germany-as-power-water-heat-supply-halted-in-avdiyivka-in-donbas.html\">has cut his official visit to Berlin short<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.president.gov.ua\/news\/prezident-proviv-naradu-z-silovikami-u-zvyazku-iz-zagostrenn-39846\">held a briefing<\/a> with military representatives to coordinate the government&#8217;s measures. <strong>Ukraine&#8217;s foreign ministry<\/strong> issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/mfa.gov.ua\/en\/press-center\/news\/54190-zajava-mzs-ukrajini-u-zvjazku-iz-zagostrennyam-situaciji-na-donbasi\">statement<\/a> saying that \u201cthe current escalation in Donbass is a clear indication of Russia&#8217;s continued disregard of its commitments under the Minsk agreements.\u201d In turn,<strong> Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-kremlin-idINKBN15F0XO\">accused<\/a> Ukrainian soldiers of launching an attack on separatists across the Avdiivka frontline. Paradoxically Russian media like TV channel Zvezda also blame <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zvezdanews\/status\/826298002864238593\">Ukraine for shelling Avdiivka itself, as if Ukraine was attacking a town on its own territory<\/a>. They also also continue producing fakes: same TV channel Zvezda, for example, published <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0BzrPOGW9YJwSZGVHNUFvVFJ0dHM\/view?usp=sharing\">photo from Avdiivka<\/a> by Kostiantyn Reutskyi, a Ukrainian activist, falsely claiming they show destruction in DPR-controlled town.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Several media continue life coverage of Avdiivka escalation<\/strong>, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiosvoboda.org\/a\/avdiivka-liveblog\/28269544.html\">RFE\/RL<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hromadske.ua\/posts\/sytuatsiia-v-avdiivtsi-shcho-vidbuvaietsia-zaraz-onlayn\">Hromadske<\/a>.
