The country started scoring targeted and powerful public relations goals abroad. At\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ukraine Crisis Media Center<\/a>, where I am a co-founder, we have actively sought to change how Ukraine is perceived. Here are five creative ways that we\u2019ve tried to change the way others view us.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1. Drew attention to Russian aggression at the G20 with a billboard<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the G20 meeting in Hamburg, Germany, on July 7-8, Ukraine Crisis Media Center (UCMC) secured a major billboard 10 meters away from the official entrance to remind world leaders about the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine. We popularized the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/herofaces.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heroic faces<\/a>\u00a0of Ukraine\u2019s service members, volunteers, and medics, who are defending the country from Russian aggression, as we did in 2016 with an ad in\u00a0<em>The Washington Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 776 762'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/images\/royaltyfree\/20170808_billboard.JPG\" alt=\"20170808 billboard\" width=\"776\" height=\"762\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The billboard went up a few days prior to the G20 meeting. After the meeting between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin, the ad was suddenly taken down before our contract had expired. The local advertising company finally admitted that they had received a call from an official who demanded that they take it down. Since they couldn\u2019t fulfill the contract, they gave us a refund.However, the campaign was a huge success: soaring media attention, zero cost, and an eyesore for Putin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the campaign was a huge success: soaring media attention, zero cost, and an eyesore for Putin.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2. Scored Ukraine\u2019s first Cannes Lion Award<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ukraine scored its first-ever Cannes Lion at the Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity for its September 2016 commemorative performance &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/babynyarwitness.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Witness<\/a>.&#8221; Dedicated to the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy and conceptualized by UCMC, the powerful performance brought international attention to the tragic location of mass killing and burial by the Nazis of thousands of innocent people during World War II.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 937 621'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/images\/royaltyfree\/20170808_witness_2.JPG\" alt=\"20170808 witness 2\" width=\"937\" height=\"621\" \/><br \/>\n<em>A live performance of Witness. It is the first Cannes Lion ever awarded to a Ukrainian organization and will trigger new ideas and projects in the industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 946 597'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/images\/royaltyfree\/20170808_lion.jpg\" alt=\"20170808 lion\" width=\"946\" height=\"597\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Witness was awarded a Bronze Lion. Credit: Cannes Lion Player<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3. Helped persuade the Dutch Senate to pass the EU Association Agreement through powerful TV commercials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In May, the Dutch Senate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eerstekamer.nl\/nieuws\/20170530\/senate_approves_association\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approved<\/a>\u00a0the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine, but its passage was never a sure thing after voters rejected the deal in a 2016 referendum. So UCMC\u2019s took to the airwaves in a blitz campaign called \u201cThree Nations\u2014One Freedom,\u201d which drew attention to the role that Canadians of Ukrainian origin played in the liberation of the Netherlands from the Nazis and about the international solidarity of people who share democratic values. With the help of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, we reminded Dutch voters that Ukrainians through the Allied (Canadian) Forces helped defend the Netherlands\u2019 freedom, and that their support of the Association Agreement means more to Ukrainians than just an agreement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our campaign consisted of a targeted TV ad campaign on major Dutch TV channels as well as a full-page ad in the\u00a0<em>Der Telegraaf<\/em>\u00a0newspaper, all prior to the vote. Wally Bunka, a 93-year-old Ukrainian Canadian who participated in D-Day and was decorated for his service by Canada and the Netherlands, was at the heart of the campaign. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wmvM9evOlJA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video provided a glimpse<\/a>\u00a0into his grief and pride over his fallen 117 Ukrainian Canadians comrades who gave their lives for Dutch freedom and were buried in local cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 928 615'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/images\/royaltyfree\/20170808_dutch.JPG\" alt=\"20170808 dutch\" width=\"928\" height=\"615\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Wally Bunka, a 93-year-old Ukrainian Canadian who participated in D-Day and was decorated for his service by Canada and the Netherlands, was at the heart of the campaign. Credit: UCMC.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, we brought Bunka to the Netherlands and Ukraine where he met with veterans, officials, diplomats, and his story became an immediate hit. In his May 8 speech commemorating World War 2, Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko mentioned Bunka and Ukrainian Canadian veterans.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4. Won Twitter spat over battle for Anna Yaroslavna through humor<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When Putin claimed on May 29 in Paris that Anna Yaroslavna (also known as Anne de Kiev) established Russia-France relations, we took to Twitter. UCMC launched Ukraine\u2019s official Twitter feed @Ukraine, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ukraine\/status\/869433723867062272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we responded with humor<\/a>: when Anne became the Queen of France, there was only an endless forest of birch trees in Russia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 810 808'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/images\/royaltyfree\/20170808_np_twitter.JPG\" alt=\"20170808 np twitter\" width=\"810\" height=\"808\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Five hours later, the Russian MFA responded with a tweet about the shared history of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. It sounded like Soviet propaganda, so we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ukraine\/status\/869532150760165377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted an animated GIF-picture<\/a>\u00a0from The Simpsons where the Russian ambassador to the United Nations changes the nameplate from Russia to Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 827 817'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/images\/royaltyfree\/20170808_np_twitter_2.JPG\" alt=\"20170808 np twitter 2\" width=\"827\" height=\"817\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our response went viral and the spat was covered by major international media, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/30\/politics\/ukraine-russia-twitter-fight-simpsons-gif\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/blogs-trending-40105483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2017\/05\/30\/and-now-a-brief-explanation-as-to-why-russia-and-ukraine-are-fighting-on-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Foreign Policy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/hayesbrown\/not-sure-this-is-what-clausewitz-meant-by-war-by-other-means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BuzzFeed<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/997451\/russia-and-ukraines-twitter-feud-over-queen-anne-has-an-important-historical-context\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quartz<\/a>. All in all, we reached eleven million online users, received 45,837 retweets, and gained an additional 10,000 new followers.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>5. Promoted Image of Ukraine as modern European democracy at Eurovision<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Eurovision Song Contest attracts over 200 million viewers every year and brings in thousands of tourists. For the host country, the contest offers a unique chance to tell its story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Conscious of this, UCMC\u2019s founding organizations CFC Consulting and Republic launched a series of projects to promote a simple message: Ukraine is a modern European democracy with tremendous potential in almost every realm of life, and Ukraine is a culturally diverse country with European values and a rich, thousand-year history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We temporarily rebranded the People&#8217;s Friendship Arch in the heart of Kyiv into the Arch of Diversity. The grim steel relic of the Soviet era was transformed into an eye-pleasing rainbow, symbolizing Ukraine&#8217;s resolve to break away from its tragic totalitarian past and its determination to build new, prosperous, and bright future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 960 720'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/images\/royaltyfree\/20170808_np_1.jpg\" alt=\"20170808 np 1\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><br \/>\n<em>The People&#8217;s Friendship Arch in the heart of Kyiv was transformed into the Arch of Diversity during Eurovision. Credit: UCMC.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We also installed a massive \u201cFREEDOM IS OUR RELIGION\u201d banner on Independence Square, the site of the dramatic fight of the Ukrainian people for independence during the 2014 Revolution of Dignity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 960 718'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/images\/royaltyfree\/20170808_np_2.jpg\" alt=\"20170808 np 2\" width=\"960\" height=\"718\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Kyiv&#8217;s Independence Square during the Eurovision competition.
