Next year the Ukrainian cinematography will mark its 125th<\/sup> anniversary. Despite the considerable cultural input on the international scale, Ukraine-produced films have rarely been a commercial success, not to mention their less favorable position in the box office against the Hollywood blockbusters. However, we have some good news to share.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

Last week for the first time in the history of the Ukrainian cinema the top-10 of the weekend box office was headed by a Ukrainian film. It\u2019s the comedy \u201cDzidzio Contrabass<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The film by Oleh Borshevskyi has set a few more records. In the first four days after the premiere, the box office reached UAH 7,65 million (approx. $294 thousand) in 218 cinema halls. The previous Ukrainian film to have set the record was \u201cPeople\u2019s Servant-2<\/a>\u201d (Sluga Narodu-2) which made UAH 5,2 million (approx. $200 thousand) over the first weekend. Moreover, 101,890 visitors went to see the film between Thursday when it was premiered and Sunday. The previous record was set in November 2014 by the drama \u201cPovodyr<\/a>\u201d \u2013 94,754 viewers in four days.<\/p>\n

The result the comedy has demonstrated at the start gives all grounds to expect that it will become the first Ukrainian film to have fully covered its production expenses through the national distribution, reports<\/a> industry web site Kinobusiness.<\/p>\n

For example, the box office of the animation film \u201cMykyta Kozhumyaka<\/a>\u201d at the start exceeded UAH 5 million (approx. $192 thousand), the final box office amounted to UAH 12 million (approx. $461 thousand). The box office of the \u201cUnbreakable<\/a>\u201d (Nezlamna) film amounted to UAH 14 million (approx. $530 thousand). Similar results were demonstrated by Oles Sanin\u2019s \u201cPovodyr\u201d in 2014.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that the national box office results of the \u201cDzidzio Contrabass\u201d is comparable to the results of Hollywood movies. Thus, the box office of Edgar Wright\u2019s \u201cBaby Driver<\/a>\u201d launched in 268 cinemas a week ago was UAH 7,3 million (approx. $280 thousand).<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian comedy has performed better than \u201cResident Evil: The Final Chapter<\/a>\u201d (UAH 7,2 million, or $270 thousand), \u201cJohn Wick: Chapter 2<\/a>\u201d (UAH 6,3 million, or $242 thousand) and \u201cLa La Land<\/a>\u201d (UAH 3 million, or 115 thousand).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
