The authorities continued to predominantly target ethnic Crimean Tatars,\u201d the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/countries\/europe-and-central-asia\/ukraine\/report-ukraine\/\">report says<\/a>. The organization also notes the ongoing arbitrary ban on the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, a self-governing body representing the ethnic Crimean Tatars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Law enforcement.\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ua.interfax.com.ua\/news\/general\/487048.html\">Ukraine\u2019s law enforcement<\/a>\u00a0keep using torture and other ill-treatment methods, Amnesty International Ukraine claims. According to the report, representatives of the law enforcement agencies yet again took to torture and other ill-treatment practices. At the same time, the report goes, following the research on the secret detention facilities of Ukraine\u2019s Security Service earlier released by Amnesty International, 20 persons were freed from such detention places. However, the appropriate investigation has failed to follow, the victims remained procedural witnesses in the respective cases.<img class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-64743\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Prava-lyudini-SBU.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ukraine\u2019s Ministry of Justice responds.\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/news\/2018\/02\/22\/7172514\/\">Deputy Minister of Justice Denys Chernyshov<\/a>\u00a0stated in 2017 no cases of torture were recorded in the Ukrainian penitentiary system. He said, last year the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture completed its work in the country. They registered no cases of torture, and there is no single reason not to believe their conclusion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Pressure on anticorruption NGOs.<\/strong>\u00a0Human rights activists are concerned with the government\u2019s growing pressure on anti-corruption activists and NGOs, in particular, the demand to submit e-declarations of assets and a draft law (not adopted yet) introducing some more complicated financial reports for NGOs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Clampdown on the freedom of expression.<\/strong>\u00a0The report also mentions the law enforcement raids to the offices of media group of companies \u201cVesti\u201d and \u201cStrana.ua\u201d, deportation of four foreign journalists (two from Spain and two from Russia) on demand of Ukraine\u2019s Security Service on allegation of \u201cthreatening Ukraine\u2019s national interests\u201d, as well as taking into custody freelance journalist Vasyl Muravytskyi, who cooperated with Russian media, on allegation of \u201cspreading anti-Ukrainian materials\u201d. Human rights defenders also point to the lack of progress in investigations into the murders of journalists Oles Buzyna (2015) and Pavel Sheremet (2016).<img class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-64748\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Radio-Vesti-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Failure to ratify the Istanbul Convention.\u00a0<\/strong>Amnesty International calls to ratify the Istanbul Convention (the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence) as quickly as possible in order to ensure higher efficiency in countering domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Lack of tolerance to LGBT.\u00a0<\/strong>The report welcomes the 2017 Equality March in Kyiv that turned to be the biggest in terms of the number of its participants and had all due security measures in place.
