Militants attack Ukrainian forces 193 times during latest ‘ceasefire’. There have been 4,376 attacks on Ukrainian army positions by Russian-backed insurgents in eastern Ukraine since the beginning of the ceasefire on September 5, the Acting Head of Press and Information of the Ministry of Defense Valentyn Buriachenko said on Monday at a briefing, according to an UNIAN correspondent. “Russian-backed insurgents have fired on Ukrainian army positions 4,376 times since the beginning of the ceasefire on September 5,” he said. “Moreover, there have been 193 attacks on Ukrainian army positions since the beginning of the latest ceasefire at 1000 on December 9,” Buriachenko said. Sawtschenko bleibt in U-Haft und tritt in unbefristeten Hungerstreik. Die in Russland inhaftierte ukrainische Pilotin und Parlamentsabgeordnete Nadija Sawtschenko soll im russischen Gefängnis mindestens bis 13. Februar bleiben. Ein Gericht in Moskau hat am Montag eine Aufhebung der Untersuchungshaft abgelehnt, meldet ein Ukrinform-Korrespondent aus Russland. Sawtschenko wurde zu einer Gerichtsverhandlung nicht gebracht. Sie sollte an der Verhandlung per Videokonferenz teilnehmen. Ihr stand ein Dolmetscher zur Verfügung. Die Ukrainerin trat in einen unbefristeten Hungerstreik. Sawtschenko erklärte, sie sei unschuldig. Der Hungerstreik würde bis zu ihrer Freilassung oder bis ihrem Tod in Russland dauern. Sawtschenko sagte zudem, sie sei Kriegsgefangene und wurde nach Russland verschleppt. Sawtschenko begann den Hungerstreik am 13. Dezember, weil ihr eine ärztliche Untersuchung und notwendige Medikamente verweigert wurden. Poroshenko appoints Chubarov to anti-corruption role. Refat Chubarov, leader of the Crimean Tatar national movement in Ukraine has been tasked by President Poroshenko to help enforce the new government’s drive to stamp out corruption. Poroshenko appointed Chubarov, human rights activist Yevhen Zakharov and historian Yaroslav Hrytsak to the newly formed Committee of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau. According to the press service of the President, the Commission will hold a competition for the post of Director of the Bureau. Eliminating corruption is considered one the most important demands of the Ukrainian electorate and Ukraine’s Western allies. The Bureau is expected to begin work by mid-January. (In English). Rada may abolish non-aligned status of Ukraine this week, clear way for possible NATO membership. Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Hroisman has said he hopes that this week the Ukrainian parliament will pass a law on the abolition of the non-aligned status of Ukraine, a move that would allow Ukraine to move closer to NATO membership. Hroisman said this on Monday during a meeting of the Coordination Board of the parliament. Serious reforms are Ukraine’s last chance. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has stated that accession to the EU “remains the biggest dream of Ukraine” and “serious reforms are the last chance” for the country. “We know that for this [accession to the EU] we need of course successful reforms in Ukraine, even if they are quite painful,” Yatseniuk said. EIB to earmark EUR 200 mln under Ukraine Early Recovery project. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is to lend Ukraine EUR 200 million under the Ukraine Early Recovery project and EUR 400 million under the Apex Loan for SMEs & Mid-Caps (Ukraine) project. The EIB Board of Directors approved the projects on December 16, 2014, while the Ukrainian government endorsed them by its resolutions dated December 19, 2014. The two projects are to be signed on December 22. The objective of the early recovery phase is to address short-term needs in the affected areas under the control of the Government of Ukraine and basic infrastructure needs to shelter internally displaced people in other regions of Ukraine, the EIB said. The objectives of the Apex Loan for SMEs & Mid-Caps (Ukraine) project include financing of small/medium-sized projects carried out by SMEs and Mid-Caps or carried out by eligible promoters of any size provided that the considered projects are in priority fields under the mandate and that financing does not exceed 30% of the overall EIB loan amount. IWF-Mission setzt ihre Arbeit in Ukraine im Januar fort. Die Mission des Internationalen Währungsfonds (IWF) kommt in die Ukraine für die weitere Arbeit im Januar 2015 zurück, geht aus der offiziellen Erklärung des Leiters der Mission Nikolai Georgiev nach Ergebnissen der Arbeit im Dezember hervor. „Die Diskussionen werden in den nächsten Wochen nach der Abreise der Mission weiter gehen.
