Rutte confirms Ukraine has been invited to NATO summit in The Hague
Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Wednesday, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that Ukraine has been invited to the NATO summit in The Hague, the Netherlands, on June 24-25.
When asked he did not, however, confirm whether he had invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi himself, what kind of participation was planned for Ukraine and whether the communiqué will mention Ukraine, saying the program with details would be published soon.
Ukraine has been invited to a NATO summit later in June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi told reporters on Monday. He said that Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha will talk to his counterparts about possible results of the summit.
At a news conference last week, Zelenskyi said that his participation in a NATO summit was not yet confirmed. “I was invited to a G7 summit by [Canada’s] Prime Minister Carney and I will be there. As for the EU summit, I will attend it in some format. We do not have any challenges there. As for the NATO [summit], Rutte told me that they would very much want Ukraine to be there. For Ukraine it is very important to understand how it can be presented there. There are a lot of different signals on NATO,” he said.
Zelenskyi has not been invited to join main discussions at the upcoming NATO summit in June to “keep Trump happy,” Euractiv said on May 15, citing internal sources.
When asked by reporters whether the U.S. is against Zelenskyi’s participation, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio answered, “No, I don’t know where you’re getting these reports from.”
Ukraine’s defense intelligence hacks Russia’s major strategic aircraft manufacturer
Ukraine’s defense intelligence said it hacked into the internal systems of Russia’s major strategic aircraft manufacturer Tupolev.
The breach gave Ukrainian operatives access to sensitive data, including internal communications, personnel files, purchase records and notes from closed-door meetings, a source in the Main Intelligence Department of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry told Ukrainska Pravda on Wednesday.
Ukraine’s intelligence agency says it had access to the company’s documents for some time and is claiming to now have comprehensive information on individuals involved in servicing Russia’s fleet of strategic bombers.
The intelligence agency also said it had placed on the homepage of Tupolev’s website an image of an owl, a symbol of Ukraine’s defense intelligence, clutching a Russian aircraft.
“There is nothing secret left in Tupolev’s activities for Ukrainian intelligence,” the source told Ukrainska Pravda, adding: “The result of the operation will be noticeable both on the ground and in the sky.”
Russia’s war has killed 631 children in Ukraine, another 2,244 have gone missing
Russia’s war has killed 631 children in Ukraine and injured 1,975 others. At least 2,244 children have gone missing since the invasion, Ukraine’s Juvenile Police said on Wednesday.
“As of today, more than 2,606 children have fallen victim to Russian Federation’s armed aggression — 631 little ones have lost their lives and more than 1,975 kids have been injured. Another 2,244 children are thought to be missing,” the juvenile police said in a statement.
Russia has deported or forcibly moved more than 19,000 Ukrainian children since the invasion. Only 1,345 of them have been brought back home, the message reads.
“Behind every number there is broken childhood, dreams cut short and parents’ hearts left empty for ever. Yet we remember every child and we won’t forget [what happened]. We will do everything to hold the guilty to account and return home those who are waiting,” the juvenile police said.
June 4 marks the Day of Remembrance for Children killed by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
