Weekly roundup. Ukraine resists Russia’s invasion. Days 1,223-1,227

This week, fighting continued to rage all along the front lines. Russia continued to pound Ukrainian cities and towns deep in the rear with missiles and drones.

On Monday, DeepState, a Ukrainian OSINT project, updated its online battlefield map to show parts of the region of Dnipro marked as “gray zone”. Ukraine’s military denied reports of a Russian breakthrough into the region. Russia has for the first time used a new Chernika drone to strike Kharkiv. Throughout the week, Russia has pummeled Ukrainian cities and towns with drones and missiles. The cities of Kharkiv, Kyiv and Odesa were among the targets.

Ukraine continued to strike military facilities deep inside Russia. On Tuesday, Ukraine’s Security Service said it had carried out a drone attack on the Kupol Electromechanical Plant in the city of Izhevsk, in Russia’s Udmurtiya region, which produces air defense systems and drones for the Russian military. Ukrainian drones attacked Russia’s Lipetsk region, home to an airbase and battery plant. Ukraine has taken out the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Major General Mikhail Gudkov.

In other news, the U.S. has paused some weapons shipments to Ukraine. Putin continues to reject a ceasefire, French President Emmanuel Macron told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyi after his phone call with the Russian leader.

Russia launches record number of drones at Ukraine overnight, targeting Kyiv.

Russia carried out a mass missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight into Friday, injuring at least 23 people in the capital, Kyiv.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia had launched 539 drones (of which more than 330 Shahed drones) and 11 missiles toward Ukraine, including a Kh-47M2 Kinzhal ballistic missile, six Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and four Iskander-K cruise missiles. Ukraine’s air defenses shot down or otherwise neutralized 476 drones (208 disappeared off radar) and two Iskander-K cruise missiles.

The main target for the attack was Kyiv. Nine Russian missiles and 63 drones hit target in eight locations, and debris from missiles and drones fell in 33 sites, it added.

The attack damaged dozens of apartment buildings, cars, educational and medical facilities in six districts of the capital. Ukraine’s state-owned railway Ukrzaliznytsia said the attack on Kyiv forced them to divert a number of passenger trains, causing delays.
