Militants violate the ceasefire 20 times and fire more than 50 mortar rounds

The situation in the conflict zone in the east of Ukraine remained volatile yesterday.  Russia-backed militants violatedthe ceasefire 20 times, using mortars 7 times. “In total, militants fired more than 50 mortar rounds at Ukrainian positions,” reported Col. Andriy Lysenko, Ukrainian Ministry of Defense spokesman on ATO-related issues, at a press briefing at Ukraine Crisis Media Center. Ukrainian servicemen responded with fire to the majority of militants’ armed provocation using the weapons not proscribed under the Minsk agreements. Ukrainian army incurred no lethal casualties yesterday, but one soldier was wounded by the hostile fire in Pisky.

Mariupol sector accounts for the highest number of militants attacks. “Here Russia-backed militants conducted 10 attacks with direct fire, using 82-mm mortars in six of the attacks. They fired 13 mines in the vicinity of Hnutove and in total 15 mines near Shyrokyne, Vodyane and Pavlopil,” noted the spokesman. In addition, Russian proxies fired from various grenade launchers and small arms in the vicinity of  Shyrokyne, Vodyane, Mariynka and Hnutove. Ukrainian servicemen responded with fire to these attacks, using grenade machine guns, heavy machine-guns and small arms.

In Luhansk sector militants fired 23 rounds from 82-mm mortar at Ukrainian positions near Troitske at about 16:00. In addition, in the morning they fired from mounted equipment of an infantry fighting vehicle near Popasna and at 20:00 opened fire in the direction of Ukrainian positions in Stanytsia-Luhanska area.

Militants violated the ceasefire 7 times in Donetsk sector. “After 15:00, the adversary conducted four attacks at our positions in the vicinity of Avdiivka, using mounted equipment of infantry fighting vehicle, as well as grenade launchers and small arms.  Russian proxies used the same type of arms in the vicinity of Troitske, Pisky and Nevelske,” said MOD spokesman.
