The case of Viktoriia Roshchyna: how to protect the rights of civilians illegally detained in the Russian Federation

On October 23 at 14:00, UCMC will host a press event “The case of Viktoriia Roshchyna: how to protect the rights of civilians illegally detained in the Russian Federation.”

On October 10, 2024, the representatives of the Ukrainian authorities and the media informed about the death of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna. The circumstances of the journalist’s death are currently being clarified, but this fact once again indicates a lack of effective mechanisms for returning and providing justice for civilians who were illegally detained in the conditions of the war waged against Ukraine by the Russian Federation.

On October 23 at 14:00, the Ukraine Crisis Media Center will host a press briefing to discuss these issues in the context of the case of Viktoriia Roshchyna and other civilians illegally detained during Russia’s war against Ukraine. The event was initiated by the Ukrainian Legal Advisory Group, whose members represent the victim in Viktoriia Roshchyna’s case.

During the discussion, the following issues will be raised:

  • a general context of the illegal detention of civilians and other crimes committed in captivity in the conditions of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine;
  • support and protection of civilians in captivity and their families at the national level;
  • efforts at the national and international levels to return detained civilians;
  • justice mechanisms and approaches to prosecution for crimes against illegally detained civilians.

The above topics will be covered both in the context of Viktoriia Roshchyna’s case and in the context of overall developments.

Working languages: Ukrainian and English (simultaneous interpreting provided).
