Cultural and artistic residence “Upon Boh”

Cultural and artistic residence “Upon Boh”* – the place of culture in de-communization process in Vinnytsia on August 20-30, 2015 *Boh is a historic name of the Pivdenny Buh river that flows through Vinnytsia.

Cultural and artistic residence “Upon Boh” emerged as a reaction of the artistic community to incompetent implementation of “de-communization laws” in Ukraine that often finds itself next to vandalism and creates pretexts for new conflicts in the society. Local half-abandoned cinema house “Rosiya” (Russia) was turned into an open public space where about 100 cultural actors and residents of Vinnytsia were holding discussions centered arounddecommunization. 27 artists-in-residence presented their visual take on the issue. About two thousand active citizens attended the events of the residence including guests from Mariupol, Donetsk, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

Result of the residence became final exposition of works by the artists-in-residence as well as a road map. The road map covers the work with de-communization theme, acute social problems and artistic tools, revitalization of public spaces and reinforcing communication between the civic sector and authorities. A series of “DE” workshops explaining work with the road map also came as one of the residence results. The works hops were held in Sloviansk, Sievierodonetsk and Mariupol.
