Russia’s war on Ukraine. Day 15: evacuation from Mariupol stalled, civilian death toll exceeds military casualties, cost of war for Ukraine

Civilian death toll two times bigger than military casualties. Ukraine’s civilian death toll far exceeds the military casualties. “As the Russian troops suffered massive losses, they started a terrorist war. They act like criminals and cowards. They kill civilians, women and children, and take them hostage,” Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said.

Russia derails civilian evacuation from Mariupol. Evacuation of civilians from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia failed as the Russian troops fired toward the evacuation corridor. Delivery of humanitarian aid to the city was halted.

“(In Mariupol), 300,000 people have no access to water and food, they suffer from cold. The enemy blocks us from saving them,” said the Minister for Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vershchuk.

Cost of war for Ukraine. “Ukraine has lost at least USD 100 billion as Russia’s invasion destroyed infrastructure, housing etc.,” said economic advisor to President Zelenskyi Oleh Ustenko.

Half of Ukrainian companies suspended operations, the rest are struggling. After the war, Ukraine will use the best architectural projects to rebuild the cities and villages that Russia destroyed, President Zelenskyi said.

Ukrainian, Russian foreign ministers end talks in Turkey with no result. Talks between Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Russia’s Sergei Lavrov ended with no breakthrough. The talks lasted an hour and a half.

“I had two things to negotiate: a humanitarian corridor to Mariupol and a 24-hour humanitarian ceasefire,” Kuleba said after the meeting.

“I hope that Lavrov will talk to decision makers in Russia. He was not in a position to agree on this. He said he will seek authorization from the leadership,” Kuleba added. They have not made progress on 24-hour ceasefire either.
