Russia’s “Oreshnik” Strike

Russia’s “Oreshnik” Strike

On November 21, Russia committed yet another war crime by deploying a ballistic missile modified for intermediate-range use on a civilian city, Dnipro. The purpose of this attack was to instill fear among Ukrainians and to “show off Russia’s strength” to the West.

The usage of this new missile signifies a new chapter in the Russian-Ukrainian war specifically due to this missile’s similarities to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). The missile’s range and its potential to be used as a nuclear weapon is a direct challenge Russia throws at the West and the “escalation management” strategy, that was employed for helping Ukraine until this time. The Kremlin is using the fear of nuclear war as a tool to manipulate the West into decreasing their support for Ukraine and to bait the West into considering putting pressure on Ukraine to initiate a ceasefire, which would essentially mean giving up the currently occupied territories.
