Over 500 sports facilities in Ukraine have been destroyed and more than 480 Ukrainian athletes and coaches have lost their lives since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The Ukrainian sports industry is also suffering due to constant shellings and blackouts. Despite it all, Oleksandr Usyk showed an incredible result during his rematch against Tyson Fury. This is why Oleksandr Usyk’s historic victory was so significant to Ukraine. It showcased the strength and spirit of the Ukrainian people during the war.
Moreover, Oleksandr Usyk was able to present Ukrainian culture worldwide and bring attention to the struggle of the Ukrainian people during wartime. At the weigh-in, Usyk held a poster reading ‘Free the Defenders of Azovstal,’ reminding the world about one of the biggest war crimes Russia has committed in Ukraine. Oleksandr Usyk holding the Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa saber became another inspiring highlight of the event.
Nowadays, international sports events are a part of cultural diplomacy, which Oleksandr Usyk had proven by turning his victory into a symbol of Ukrainian resilience against Russian aggression.
