On June 23, the European Council granted Ukraine EU candidate status. This was Ukraine’s another symbolic victory on the road to victory over Russia. Such a decision became historic for Europe and a clear message to the Kremlin.
According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, it strengthens both Ukraine and Europe in the face of Russian aggression. While Moscow is trying to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and still sees it as Russia’s sphere of influence, our country demonstrates persistence and determination on its way towards EU integration. This is a choice that Ukrainians have been fighting for 8 years, repelling Russian attacks, and spilling their blood for a free democratic future.
While Russia launches a massive information campaign to devalue Ukraine’s candidate status, portraying such a decision as a “gesture of pity”, Kyiv is getting ready to implement reforms to ensure the selection of qualified judges, limit the influence of oligarchs, and improve the track record on investigations, prosecutions, and corruption convictions.
Speakers:
- Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze, Ukrainian MP, Head of the committee for integration of Ukraine to European Union
- Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine
- Oleksandr Sushko, Executive Director of the International Renaissance Foundation.
