Volunteers who help people with disabilities amid war

Volunteers who help people with disabilities amid war. Ukraine in Flames #190

Ukrainians in the war zone have been forced to flee their homes to escape the constant shelling and missile attacks as well as the threat of Russian occupation. The disabled have been in an especially crititcal situation, often having no opportunity to leave the dangerous areas on their own.

Volunteers evacuating people with disabilities have become an important part of the effort to save people from hot spots of war. They face numerous challenges, and the availability of evacuation depends on many factors: whether there is shelling, how safe it is to drive, etc. However, no matter the circumstances, the volunteers strive to help all those in need, often taking the fate of the evacuees close to their heart.

In this episode of Ukraine In Flames, we explore a personal story of volunteer Dmytro Maksymovych, who first encountered the challenges of evacuating people while having his mother taken away from Kyv under seige, and Nataliya Kantsidal, who uses her experience of a social worker from before the war in helping Ukrainians now.

Speakers:

  • Dmytro Maksymovych, volunteer
  • Natalia Kantsidal, social worker of “Caritas” Foundation
