Grain deal: Ukraine and Russia

Grain deal: Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine in Flames #265

Since the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been trying to weaponize food and use it as a bargaining chip and as an instrument of influence in its aggressive war. Trying to undermine the Grain Deal as an initiative that was aimed to provide Ukrainian importers with wheat and grain in the conditions of large-scale war, Russia was also trying to speculate on a sensitive topic.

Russia has been systematically trying to shift the blame for the global food crisis to Ukraine – and, as a result, undermine the western weapons supply to Ukraine and persuade it to negotiate on Russia’s won terms. However, this strategy ended up being unsuccessful, as well as the attempts to disrupt the functioning of the grain corridor.

As a result, Russia once again proved it is not a reliable partner to negotiate and cooperate with. Now, when the grain initiative is possible without Russia as a fourth party, with the United Nations, Turkey, and Ukraine as the only candidates, Russia’s participation in international organizations does not look mandatory.
