UN World Food Program’s Executive Director David Beasley said blocking Ukraine’s southern ports in the Black Sea could trigger a global food disaster that would lead to famine, mass migration and political instability. He encouraged the international community to intervene in order to protect ports for humanitarian purposes and to facilitate port opening across the globe.
Russia’s UN Envoy Vassily Nebenzia blamed the rising food prices on “hysterical sanctions” imposed on his country by the US and other Western powers. In turn, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman blamed the situation solely on Putin. She said Russian forces have bombed at least three civilian ships carrying goods from ports on the Black Sea, and accused the Russian navy of blocking access to Ukrainian ports to cut off exports of grain.
