Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has destroyed at least 700 Ukrainian libraries in hundreds of villages and towns. The destruction of Ukrainian culture and education is one of Moscow’s tasks because its primary goal is to erase Ukrainian statehood from the world map.
Such systematic destruction of Ukrainian literature is a struggle against Ukrainian national identity to turn the population of forcibly captured territories into people without a national idea and then into Russians. That is why it is the task of the Ukrainian authorities and international and public organizations to protect libraries as cultural centres.
The Ukrainian public initiated several initiatives to fill the libraries destroyed by the Russians. Preservation of the literary fund is essential in the context of the recent attacks of the Kremlin army on publishing facilities in Kharkiv.
