A major Russian drone and missile attack kills seven in Kyiv. Russian mRussia unleashed a major drone and missile attack on Ukraine overnight on Tuesday, with Kyiv being the main target. The cities of Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia as well as the region of Poltava were also targeted.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia had launched 656 drones of various types and 73 missiles toward Ukraine, including eight 3M22 Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missiles, 33 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 27 Kh-101 cruise missiles from Tu-95MS strategic bombers and five Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles.
Ukraine’s air defenses shot down or otherwise neutralized 602 drones and 40 missiles, including 11 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 26 Kh-101 cruise missiles and three Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles.
Thirty ballistic and three cruise missiles as well as 38 drones hit target in 38 locations. Drone debris fell in 15 other sites, the Air Force added.
In Kyiv, seven people were killed and 90 others wounded.
Eight of the city’s 10 districts sustained damage. Firefighters and rescue teams worked on 29 sites across the capital.
The strike damaged a production site of the DTEK private energy company. Power was cut off to 140,000 consumers in the Svyatoshynskyi, Obolonskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts, and subsequently restored.
Within Kyiv, apartment buildings, including a nine-story residential building in the Podilskyi district, a car salon, administrative building, educational facility, outbuildings, a gas station, service center of the Interior Ministry, five medical facilities in the Podilskyi, Svyatoshynskyi and Holosiyivskyi districts were damaged. A medical clinic servicing 20,000 patients in the Holosiyivskyi district was heavily damaged.
More than 41,000 residents, including almost 4,500 children, sought refuge in underground stations, Kyiv Metro authorities said. It marked the highest number of people to have taken shelter in the metro during a night-time air raid alert in recent years.

A Russian missile attack on the city of Dnipro, part of a broader attack on Ukraine overnight on Tuesday, killed 16 people and injured 42 others. Two boys, ages three and eight, were among those killed. Among the victims was also a firefighter who was on call at the time. A section of a residential building was ruined.
Twenty-four people remain in hospitals following the attack, head of the Dnipro regional military administration, Oleksandr Hanzha said in a post to social media on Tuesday. They have shrapnel wounds, fractures, lacerated wounds, cuts, blast injuries and concussions.
Dnipro city authorities have declared a day of mourning on Wednesday, June 3.

Ukraine’s air defenses destroyed more than 57,000 Russian aerial targets in May 2026, the country’s Air Force said Tuesday.
It also said it had flown 1,089 sorties last month, of which more than 700 provided air cover and around 230 fire and air support.
Among the 57,000 Russian targets that Ukraine took out are two Kh-47 M2 Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missiles, 50 Kh-101 air-launched cruise missiles, 10 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, 11 Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles, 15 Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles, 24 Iskander-K cruise missiles, 5,053 Shahed attack drones, 1,316 reconnaissance drones and 50,894 drones of other types.
