Weekly roundup. Ukraine resists Russia’s invasion. Days 852-856

This week, fighting continued to rage all across the front lines. Early in the week, Russia launched Iskander-K cruise missiles at Odesa and Iskander-M ballistic missiles at Pokrovsk, in Donetsk region, causing casualties. Glide bomb attacks are almost a daily occurrence in Kharkiv. Late in the week, Russia dropped a 500-kilogram aerial bomb on a residential neighborhood in Selydove, injuring children. Ukraine struck a drone warehouse and training ground in Russia’s Krasnodar region, destroying dozens of drones that Russia uses to attack Ukraine.

International support to Ukraine grows stronger. EU countries have approved a first tranche of military aid for Ukraine coming from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets. Ukraine has formally started EU accession talks. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russia’s Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov for alleged crimes committed during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.  

The vast majority of Ukrainians believe that Ukraine will win the war with Russia. One-in-three say it will happen in a year or two, according to a recent survey. Almost 2.4 million Ukrainians have updated their personal data in the military registry. Late in the week, Ukraine and the EU signed a security agreement.

Ukraine marks Constitution Day

On Constitution Day, on Friday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and protect their country.

“Our Constitution’s first article begins with the word ‘Ukraine,’ Zelenskyi said in a video address. “From the first minutes of the war, millions of people proved that Ukraine really comes first for them, everyone who thought, first and foremost, not of themselves, who understands that in times of war, a key duty comes to the fore. Article 17 of the Constitution: protecting Ukraine is the most important function of the state and a matter of concern for the entire Ukrainian people,” Zelenskyi said.

In his statement posted to social media, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi thanked service members and said the defense of the homeland is the citizens’ duty. “I call on all Ukrainians to join the defense forces,” Syrskyi said.
