Not Alone: The Power of Community for Women Affected by War

Press center UCMC announce

On July 16 will host an international panel discussion titled “Not Alone: The Power of Community for Women Affected by War.”

The event will focus on women who have survived missile attacks and sustained life-altering injuries — and explore how both Ukrainian and international communities can help them return to a dignified, full life.

This is the first open conversation intentionally inviting an international audience.

The organizers aim to make a reasoned appeal to global foundations and corporate donors for immediate support. Follow-up discussions with Ukrainian businesses and government representatives are also in the works.

At the center of the event is the true story of a civilian survivor of a drone attack in Kyiv.

Alyona Palamarchuk, a 21-year-old woman from Kyiv, was severely wounded in a Shahed drone explosion. Her life was saved by hospital doctors — including through the use of VAC (negative pressure wound) therapy — but full recovery remains out of reach. Her story is not only a testimony of pain but also a call to action.

Discussion Topics:

  • Why do Ukrainian women with war injuries still lack systemic access to recovery and rehabilitation?
  • How does VAC therapy save lives — and why must it be scaled across Ukraine?
  • Why can’t the state and Ukrainian business tackle this issue on their own?
  • What role can international partners play — as supporters, not substitutes?

The organizers emphasize: “If support is to happen “here and now,” international engagement is essential”.

This event is just the first step toward building a cross-border partnership capable of offering injured women in Ukraine a real chance at recovery and renewal.
