How Russia Used Its Parliamentary Elections in Occupied Territories

With opposition virtually absent and violations widespread, the elections to the State Duma in Russia were used to strengthen Putin’s regime but also to once again attack the sovereignty of Ukraine.

The Kremlin-sponsored campaign before the elections was carefully prepared in the occupied parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions – to the point when the command of the puppet armed forces held “drill elections” to make sure the locals would vote for the ruling United Russia party. 396 “explanatory centers” were opened urging Ukrainians to vote.

  • What were the Kremlin’s goals behind involving Ukrainians from the occupied territories in the elections?
  • Which measures were used to push the residents of the occupied Donbas to vote?
  • What was the role of illegal passportization?
