KYIV (11 June 2019) – On 13 June, Fiona Frazer, the Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, will give her last press conference in this capacity. Fiona Frazer will present the 26threport on the human rights situation in Ukraine, prepared by the Mission under her leadership.
The press conference will take place on Thursday, 13 June 2019, 11:00, at the Ukraine Crisis Media Centre, Khreshchatyk Street, 2 (Ukrainian house), Kyiv.
The 26threport on the human rights situation in Ukraine covers the period between 16 February and 15 May 2019. Its findings are based on 179 in-depth interviews with witnesses and victims of human rights violations, as well as site visits and trial monitoring.
The report by the UN Human Rights Office covers a wide range of violations that occurred throughout Ukraine, including in the armed conflict zone, on both sides of the contact line. The report provides detailed statistics for conflict-related civilian casualties, and analyses the incremental impact the conflict has on civilians. The report also describes emblematic cases of arbitrary detention and torture, illustrates interference in the work of courts, gives an overview of the developments within the civic space. A dedicated section in the report analyses the human rights situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine, temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation.
By presenting this report, Fiona Frazer will also reflect on the past five years she has spent in Ukraine, first as a the Deputy and then as the Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. Fiona Frazer will present key human rights recommendations for the new leadership of the country, including the President.
The press conference will be English, with interpretation into Ukrainian and sign language. Copies of the new report and other materials will be available at the press conference.
