Has Russia Lost Syria?

Has Russia Lost Syria?

For almost a decade Russia has been a force behind Syria’s suffering. In order to turn Syria into its geopolitical leverage in the Middle East, Russia provided military support to Bashar al-Assad and his regime, facilitating war crimes such as using chemical weapons against civilian rebels.

However, since November 27th Syrian rebel forces have managed to turn the situation in their favour. Russia has been stretched thin as its war against Ukraine has exceeded the initial “3 days” deadline by over 1000 days. Thus, Russia was unable to provide support to al-Assad, allowing the rebels to finally shake his control.

Having to save face after losing major leverage in Syria, the Kremlin has predictably chosen to shift the blame and find a scapegoat to blame instead of Russia itself.
