Russia has caused several environmental disasters since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Among the latest ones was the oil leak caused by the wreckage of two Russian oil tankers, Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, in the Sea of Azov. As a result, up to 8,000 tons of oil products were leaked into the sea, polluting the local ecosystem.
Both vessels were a part of the Russian “shadow fleet”, which is the name for a group of oil tankers Moscow uses to avoid international sanctions while selling oil. The vessels of the shadow fleet are outdated and operate with no regard for the safety measures required to avoid environmental disasters such as the recent oil leak.
As Russia continues to disregard the norms of international law, geopolitical and environmental crimes continue. This incident is yet another proof that the world needs a more effective mechanism for monitoring and enforcing the fulfillment of international sanctions.
