The Evolution of Russian Propaganda in 2024

As 2024 ended, it is time for yearly reviews and sums-ups. The past year was busy for Russian propaganda, bringing new plots and strategies to the global information space. Using hybrid warfare tools to interfere with elections was one of the new “trends” Russia introduced in 2024. The Kremlin’s propaganda machine went all in promoting pro-Russian candidates during elections in Moldova and Georgia, using AI and cyberattacks to sow chaos in the U.S. and using botnets and paid social media accounts to boost the election campaign of one of Moscow’s “favorite” candidates in Romania.

Another strategy Russia betted on in 2024 was intimidation tactics, which consisted of nuclear blackmail and threats of open war, meant to divide the West. And, of course, the “old favorites” were not forgotten, as the Kremlin worked on upgrading and scaling up the tradition of ruining its opponents’ reputations by creating rumors, deepfakes, and personal attacks.

2024 has shown us that Russian propaganda is continuing to grow bolder and keeps searching for ways to evolve. This is why in 2025 it is important to remain informed and vigilant, making sure that propaganda and disinformation do not shape people’s views.
