On January 26th Alexander Lukashenko became the President of Belarus for the sevenths time, winning yet another sham of an election with over 87% of the votes in his favour. EU leaders condemned the election results, pointing out the severe repression, lack of media freedom, and total absence of political competition. Alexander Lukashenko’s “presidency” is a time of dictatorship, that turned Belarus into an accomplice to Russia’s geopolitical manipulations and war crimes.
Since the beginning of Russian-Ukrainian war, Belarus became a logistics point for Russia, “lending” Moscow Belarusian factories and infrastructure for military purposes, even going so far as opening the country as a base for Russian troops’ deployment. Belarus being involved in one of Russia’s most ruthless crimes – the abduction of Ukrainian children became one of the most grim revelation, signalling to the world that it can’t keep turning a blind eye towards Lukashenko’s regime.
