The name Volyn tragedy refers to one of the most grievous events in Polish and Ukrainian history. It happened during World War II in the Volyn region – the western part of Ukraine. Volyn had been a topic of dispute between both nations for decades. It escalated during World War II due to the fear that Volyn might fall under Poland’s control after the war. The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, also known as OUN, took drastic measures. The following tragedy took, by historical estimation, over 35,000 Polish and over 21,000 Ukrainian lives.
For the longest time, both nations struggled to reconcile in the face of the Volyn tragedy. For Polish people, it was an act of genocide against innocent people, while Ukrainians point out how OUN’s actions were caused by the fear of Ukraine losing its last territories and the need to ensure Volyn would remain a part of Ukraine. Even now, 80 years later, there is tension, especially around the question of whether Poland would oppose Ukraine joining the EU due to the memory of the Volyn tragedy.
However, there is hope as well. Some Ukrainian historians, such as Yaroslav Hrytsak, argue that it is important that Ukraine accept its role in the tragedy and Poland – its role in the lead-up to the tragedy. In recent years, both countries have been working towards the approach of ‘We ask for forgiveness and we forgive’, seeking ways to learn from history and heal in the future.
