Ukrainian civilians running from the war receive warm welcome abroad

Russia’s genocidal war has targeted mostly civilians since the very first days of the full-scale invasion: the aggressor attempted to break the Ukrainians’ spirit and make them surrender through shelling residential areas of the country’s biggest cities, maternity wards and hospitals, perpetrating atrocities of the most unthinkable nature, and now, increasingly attacking the energy infrastructure right in the middle of winter.

All this, as well as occupation of almost 20 % of Ukraine and active hostilities on the frontline forced around 7.8 million Ukrainians, mostly women and children, flee their homeland and find refuge in Europe, with over 1.5 million warmly received in Poland.

It is extremely challenging to cope with the new reality of war, especially if everything you had called home was ruined by the enemy, and simultaneously integrate in the hosting communities and try to build life from scratch. Ukrainians are resilient, however, and find ways to not only to adapt to the new culture abroad but also contribute to Ukraine’s victory in all possible ways with assistance of the hosting countries.
