Bakhmut, Ukraine: what’s the situation in the town?

Bakhmut is a fortress Ukrainian defenders keep heroically defending despite the vast numbers of occupiers assaulting it day and night for over 6 months. According to Ukrainian servicemen, the Russians don’t count their people, they just keep coming. They don’t even take their dead soldiers away. If anyone dies, they remain in the field.

The hero city has become almost deserted, but a few thousand citizens that are still there mostly live in basements and shelters due to the constant enemy shelling. Bakhmut’s entire critical infrastructure has been destroyed. There is no electricity, water, gas, mobile signal, or Internet there.

The capture of Soledar, a city near Bakhmut, took an inadequately great toll on the occupiers, which no normal modern army would pay. But the Russian leadership doesn’t essentially need Soledar, they need Bakhmut. They saw that it was impossible to seize the Bakhmut fortress and had to go with the plan of potential encirclement to drive the Ukrainian defenders out of the city.
