The significance of documenting the war

Documentary photography has become a powerful front of the Russia-Ukraine war: images of horrific war crimes showing the true face of the Russian military to the world have effectively confronted Russian propaganda that relies on photoshopped, staged photos and deepfakes.

While having to deal with the danger of being on the frontline or under occupation, Ukrainian photographers manage to take crucial photos that define the horrors of the Russian war and the resilience of the Ukrainian spirit. Just one example of international acclaim received by Ukrainian photographer – Dmytro Kozatskyi, an Azov regiment soldier who defended Mariupol and whose depiction of Ukrainian defenders became a symbol of their heroism, won a Prix de Photographie Paris award while being in Russian captivity.

Ukraine In Flames looks at two accounts of photographers: Christopher Occhicone, American documentary photographer and photojournalist, who came to Ukraine to document the war in Donbas in 2014 and stayed, and Yuriy Stefaniak, photographer from Ukraїner project that switched from exploring culture to covering different war topics after the start of the full-scale invasion.
