On February 3, a historic Ukraine–EU summit was held in Kyiv, in which Ukraine for the first time took part as a candidate country. Based on its results, the leaders of the EU and Ukraine issued a joint statement reflecting Ukraine’s and the EU’s views and expectations of the country’s EU accession path.
Most importantly, Ursula von der Leyen has voiced reassurance that Europe will continue to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes – “until the day when the Ukrainian flag will be raised where it belongs: in Brussels at the heart of the European Union.”
However, Ukraine still has to implement all seven steps of the European Commission’s recommendation, and Ukraine’s road to EU membership will not be without obstacles. On the anniversary of signing the Maastricht Treaty, UCMC looks at the prospects and challenges Ukraine may face while becoming a member of the EU.
