Will Turkey remain a mediator in this war after the devastating earthquake?

Turkey has contributed significant efforts as a mediator and facilitator in the Russian-Ukrainian full-scale war, attempting to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table. Of course, such a pursuit was not born out of simple want for the neighboring countries’ welfare: Turkey has aimed to reach its own goals.

Ankara’s mediator’s role, therefore, relies on many reasons, such as economic goals, displaying itself as a regional power, and building a positive image of Erdogan’s role in the war within the Turkish political discourse.

The efficiency of Ankara’s shuttle diplomacy is debatable. While it should be admitted that Turkey helped a lot to implement several important deals, such as the grain agreement and the prisoner swap, Erdogan’s aid on a larger scale has not been as successful. We delve into this matter and also discuss the influence of the recent earthquakes with our experts in Ukraine In Flames #353.
